Mesa Community College (MCC) GPA Calculator

A grade is assigned at the conclusion of each course. Courses may be repeated to improve a grade: students may attempt a course up to three additional times after the initial attempt (four attempts total). The lower grade and credit for a repeated course taken at the same college are automatically excluded from the GPA calculation; if the course was taken at a different Maricopa college, the student must request the exclusion.

Some courses may be taken under a credit/no-credit (P/Z) system. A grade of P is treated as equivalent to a grade of C or higher for qualification purposes but is not computed into the GPA; a grade of Z (no credit) is likewise not computed into the GPA.

An incomplete grade (I) may be requested when a student is otherwise doing acceptable work but cannot finish by the end of the term; the maximum time allowed to complete the work is seven months from the last date of class.

MCCCD uses a 4.0 scale and does not use a weighted GPA calculation for honors or advanced placement courses. GPA is calculated by multiplying each course's credit hours by the grade point value of the grade received, summing those totals, and dividing by the total credit hours. There are three types of GPA: Semester GPA (courses taken in one semester at a single Maricopa college), Overall Cumulative GPA (all courses at a single Maricopa college), and Graduation GPA (all courses applied toward a specific degree or certificate, including accepted transfer credit). All GPAs are truncated to three decimal points.

Academic renewal ("academic forgiveness") lets a student exclude grades of D, F, or Y from their cumulative GPA for up to 24 credits taken at Maricopa colleges; courses graded A, B, or C are never excluded. The policy may be used only once and cannot be revoked once approved. Academic renewal at one Maricopa college does not guarantee that colleges outside the Maricopa Community Colleges will accept the adjustment.

Academic standing is defined by a student's cumulative GPA. Students with a GPA of 2.0 or higher are in academic good standing.

A student who has not achieved a cumulative GPA of 2.0 after completing 11 or fewer credit hours is placed on academic warning. A student who has completed 12 or more credit hours with a cumulative GPA below 2.0 is placed on academic probation, and may take no more than 12 credit hours per semester (unless an appeal is reviewed and approved). A student on continued probation (still below 2.0) may be limited to 6 credit hours per semester.

To earn a certificate or degree, a student must earn a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 on the four-point scale in the coursework (100-level and above) used to satisfy degree or certificate requirements, completed in residence and accepted in transfer (some awards may specify a different minimum). Minimum total credits are 120 for bachelor's degrees and 60 for associate degrees, with at least 30 (bachelor's) or 15 (associate's) of those credits completed in residence at the awarding college.

The President's Honor List, for each MCCCD college, recognizes students who complete 12 or more credit hours in courses numbered 100 or higher in a single semester with a semester GPA of 3.75 or higher.

Graduation honors are based on cumulative GPA at the time of the graduation petition: 3.50–3.69 graduates "with distinction," 3.70–3.89 "with high distinction," and 3.90–4.00 "with highest distinction." Certificate programs are not eligible for these graduation honors.

Transfer credit accepted toward a Maricopa degree or certificate is included in the Graduation GPA calculation alongside coursework completed at the awarding college. Students transferring general-education coursework into MCCCD under the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC), or transferring in a completed bachelor's degree or higher, must have completed that coursework with a grade of "C" or better for it to satisfy MCCCD's general-education requirements.
