Florida Atlantic University (FAU) GPA Calculator

FAU uses a plus/minus (+/–) letter-grade system, and the same table applies to both undergraduate and graduate courses. There is no A+ — the highest grade FAU publishes is A, worth 4.00 grade points.

Only the twelve A–F rows shown above carry a grade-point value. Every other notation on an FAU transcript — AU (audit), CR (credit by exam), I (incomplete), NC (no credit), NR (no reported grade), P (pass, undergraduates only), S (satisfactory), U (unsatisfactory), W (withdrawal), WM (withdrawal, exceptional circumstance) and ZR (drop retained, no longer in use) — carries no grade-point value at all and is never counted in your GPA.

An Incomplete (I) is a temporary designation for coursework legitimately missed due to a documented interruption. It is neither passing nor failing and is never used in computing your GPA, at any point — but you cannot graduate from any FAU degree program while an Incomplete remains on your record, so it must eventually be resolved to a letter grade.

Certain courses are graded Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (S/U) instead of by letter. An S earns credit but is never included in your GPA; a U earns no credit and is also never included in your GPA. FAU also runs a No Credit (NC) policy on select General Education and lower-division courses: if your grade falls short of the course's minimum, you receive NC instead of a letter, and NC is not calculated in your GPA (grades that do meet the minimum are calculated normally).

Except where the Forgiveness Policy applies, your GPA is the sum of all grade points earned at FAU divided by the total credits in every course graded A through F. Courses graded S, U, I, P, AU, CR, W, WM, ZR, NC or NR are excluded entirely — they are never part of the calculation, in either direction.

Only FAU coursework counts. Grades and GPAs from any other institution you attended are posted to your transcript for reference, but they have no effect on your FAU GPA or your academic standing at FAU.

The University Forgiveness Policy lets an undergraduate repeat an FAU course and count only the higher grade toward the GPA — the original grade stays on the transcript but is removed from the GPA calculation. You may use it up to three times during your undergraduate career (no more than two of those at the 3000/4000 level), it does not apply to non-degree or transient enrollment or to S/U courses, the repeated course must be taken at FAU itself, and grades from an academic-integrity violation can never be forgiven. If you repeated a course at another institution before transferring, FAU honors that institution's own forgiveness of it.

Your GPA is truncated to three decimal places, not rounded up — so a calculated 3.4999 displays as 3.499, not 3.500.

Undergraduates are in good standing when both their cumulative FAU GPA and their most recent term GPA are 2.0 or higher. Falling below 2.0 in a term places you on academic probation; you come off probation only once you post a 2.0-or-higher term GPA and your cumulative FAU GPA is back to 2.0 or higher. An undergraduate on probation who fails to reach a 2.0 term GPA while still below a 2.0 cumulative GPA is suspended; failing that standard again after returning from suspension leads to dismissal.

Graduate students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher in their program. Falling below 3.0 at the end of any semester places a graduate student on academic probation and requires an approved Academic Progression Plan; individual graduate programs may set stricter requirements.

To graduate, an FAU undergraduate must have a satisfactory academic record — defined as an average of C or better, i.e. 2.0 on the 4.0 scale, on all work attempted. Some majors set a higher floor. Graduate students must maintain a cumulative 3.0, described in the catalog as "the minimum quality necessary for a graduate degree at Florida Atlantic University."

You cannot graduate from any FAU degree program — including an Associate of Arts degree — while an Incomplete (I) remains on your record; it must first be resolved to a letter grade.

Dean's List requires a full-time load (at least 12 credits of graded coursework) and a term GPA of 3.5 or greater. President's List requires the same 12-credit full-time load with a term GPA of 4.0. Both are based on grades as reported on the official grade-reporting date; coursework graded AU, I, NC, NR, P, S, U, W or WM does not count toward either list.

FAU's Latin honors — Baccalaureate Degrees of Distinction — require at least 30 credits of graded coursework at FAU (the same AU/I/NC/NR/P/S/U/W/WM exclusions apply) and are based on your FAU institutional GPA (your Recalculated GPA, where applicable), truncated to three decimal places:

• cum laude — 3.500 or higher
• magna cum laude — 3.700 or higher
• summa cum laude — 3.900

To have honors announced publicly at the Commencement ceremony, you need a 3.500 GPA before the term in which you plan to graduate. All degrees of distinction must also be recommended by the faculty of the degree-granting program.

Coursework from another institution never enters your FAU GPA. Your prior institution's grades and its own GPA are listed on your FAU transcript for reference, but they have no effect on your FAU GPA or your academic standing at FAU — only grades earned in FAU coursework are used in the calculation.

For graduate admission, FAU accepts a maximum of 6 transfer credits toward a master's degree and 36 transfer credits toward a doctoral degree from another institution, plus up to 6 credits earned as a non-degree-seeking graduate student. To be accepted, a transferred course must have earned a grade of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale at a regionally accredited institution, be relevant to the FAU program, appear on the official transcript, and have been completed within six years of admission.
