How GPA is calculated

Cumulative GPA is calculated by multiplying credit hours by each course's grade points, summing the results, and dividing by total attempted credits. GPA is calculated to the third decimal point.

The following grades do not count toward GPA units or points: W (Withdrawn), INC (Incomplete), P (Pass), NA (Nonattendance), AUD (Audit), NAU (Not Completed Audit), SAT (Satisfactory — graduate courses only), COM (Completed Competency), and Y (placeholder for a year-long course).

Under Pass/Fail grading, a grade of P counts toward graduation credits only and does not affect GPA; a grade of F counts as a failure and is included in cumulative credits.

Dean's List and Latin Honors

Dean's List requires a minimum semester GPA that varies by college; courses graded "P" never count toward the graded-credit minimum:

  • College of Liberal Arts: at least 9 graded credits with a 3.50 GPA or higher and no incompletes.
  • College of Science and Mathematics & School for the Environment: at least 12 credits with a 3.5 GPA or higher and no grades below a C.
  • McCormack School of Policy Studies: at least 9 credits with a 3.5 GPA or higher.
  • College of Nursing and Health Sciences — Nursing: at least 9 credits with a 3.5 GPA or higher. Exercise and Health Sciences: at least 12 credits with a 3.5 GPA or higher.
  • College of Management: a minimum of two courses that semester with a 3.6 GPA or higher and no incomplete grades.

Latin Honors are awarded only to undergraduates at graduation, based on cumulative GPA: Cum Laude (3.30–3.49), Magna Cum Laude (3.50–3.74), Summa Cum Laude (3.75–4.00).

How do I convert semester GPA to cumulative GPA at UMB?
Your cumulative GPA is the credit-weighted average of your semester GPAs across every semester: (semester GPA₁ × credits₁ + … + semester GPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + … + creditsₙ). Save each semester to the tracker on this page, by course or as a quick semester GPA + credits entry, and it works out your cumulative GPA on every save, edit and delete.
Is this UMB GPA calculator free, and is my data private?
Yes. GPAWise is free, with no signup, and your courses and saved semesters stay in your browser: nothing is sent to our servers. "Clear all tracker data" on the tracker wipes them at any time.
