Grading Notes
No A+ grade is awarded. Final grades of P and F (used for the Pass-Fail option) and S and U (used for select internships, teaching assistantships, and H&PE activity courses) do not earn quality points and are not counted toward the GPA. E is the only true-failure letter grade that carries quality points (0.0).
Students may elect the Pass-Fail option for no more than four courses total during their undergraduate program; Pass-Fail credit cannot be applied toward major, minor, or concentration requirements. A grade of P requires work equivalent to C- or better; D- or E-level work is instead recorded as F. Neither P nor F affects GPA.

How GPA Is Calculated
GPA equals total quality points earned divided by total credits carried in courses graded A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D, or E. Two GPAs are computed each semester: a Current Semester GPA and a Cumulative Record GPA. GPAs are truncated to two decimal places, with no rounding up from the third decimal.
When a course is repeated, only the higher (or highest) grade counts toward the cumulative GPA; if the same grade is earned again, it is counted once, using the credits and quality points from the most recent attempt. Grades and quality points earned at other institutions never transfer into the Geneseo GPA.
Under the Fresh Start program, a student readmitted after academic dismissal or resignation with a GPA below 2.0 may have E grades earned before leaving excluded from the overall GPA, once at least a 2.0 GPA is earned in the first 12 credits back.

Good Standing, Warning, and Probation
Full-time matriculated students are in good standing each semester if they complete at least 11 credits (8 in their first semester) with a term and cumulative GPA of 2.00 or higher; part-time students must complete all attempted credits with the same 2.00 GPA minimum.
Students who fall short of the credit minimum are placed on Credit Warning. Students who meet the credit minimum but post a term GPA under 2.0 (while their cumulative GPA stays above 2.0) are placed on Academic Warning. Matriculated students who have completed at least two semesters are placed on Academic Probation if their cumulative GPA falls below 2.0, or after two consecutive semesters of Credit Warning; they are dismissed if they fail to return to good standing the following semester.

Graduation Credit Requirements
The minimum credit requirement for a bachelor's degree is 120 credits (no more than 126 without special justification). Candidates must apply for graduation once they have completed 90 credits. To participate in the May commencement ceremony, a student must be on track to complete 105 credits by the end of that spring semester, with a viable path to finishing remaining requirements that summer or fall.

Semester and Degree Honors
Dean's List (fall/spring semesters only): 12 or more credits carrying quality points, no grades of D, E, U, or F, no Incomplete grades, and a semester GPA of 3.50 or above. Students who also post a 4.00 semester GPA are named to the President's List as well.
| Degree Honor Designation | Cumulative GPA Range |
|---|---|
| Summa Cum Laude | 3.80-4.00 |
| Magna Cum Laude | 3.65-3.79 |
| Cum Laude | 3.50-3.64 |
Degree Honors additionally require completion of at least 45 credits at the College in courses that earned quality points.

Transfer Credit Rules
Grades and quality points earned at other institutions never transfer; only credit does, and a C- or higher must have been earned in each course accepted (Pass/Fail or Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory grades are never accepted for transfer credit).
Transfer limits: up to 45 credits from concurrent high-school enrollment (of which at most 30 may be AP/IB/CLEP); up to 64 credits from a two-year institution (plus up to 15 more for upper-level major coursework); and up to 90 credits from a four-year institution, inclusive of the AP/IB/CLEP and two-year maximums.
