How Your GPA Is Calculated

Your grade point average (GPA) results from the number of quality points (or grade points) divided by the number of credit hours.

SUNY Niagara uses two different GPAs: the cumulative GPA reflects all courses you have taken at SUNY Niagara, while the degree GPA reflects only courses that apply toward your declared degree program or major and is the GPA used for graduation.

If you repeat a course, the most recent grade recorded becomes the official grade used for GPA computation, whether it is higher or lower than the original grade — except a U grade may not replace an F grade. If the repeat attempt itself results in a nonprogress grade (I, J, X, or W), the original grade is used in the GPA calculation instead. All original grades remain on the transcript regardless of later repeats.

Grades of S, U, W, X, and transfer credit (T) do not affect your GPA. Only a course taken at SUNY Niagara is used to compute the SUNY Niagara GPA.

Graduation GPA Requirement

Graduation at SUNY Niagara is based on a 2.00 minimum Degree GPA. If you have switched your major or taken coursework outside your degree program, some of those courses may not apply to your Degree GPA.

Academic Honors

  • Dean's List – enrolled full-time with 12 or more credit hours and a semester GPA of 3.5 or better.
  • Part-Time Honors – enrolled in 6 to 11 credit hours with a semester GPA of 3.5 or better.
  • President's List – a semester GPA of 4.0.

Students are ineligible for any of these lists if they have incomplete coursework, or a grade of S, U, W, or below C.

Transfer Credit and Your GPA

While a student may repeat a course at another college, only a course taken at SUNY Niagara is used to compute the SUNY Niagara grade point average (GPA). Transfer credit (recorded with a T grade) does not carry quality points and does not affect the SUNY Niagara GPA. Courses repeated after graduation will not change the degree GPA achieved at graduation.
