Additional Grade Symbols
Beyond the lettered grades used in GPA calculation, SUNY Fredonia's transcript uses several additional symbols that do not carry quality points:
- I (Incomplete) — a temporary grade for extenuating circumstances; unresolved work becomes an F by the end of the next regular semester unless the instructor sets an earlier deadline.
- IP (In Progress) — assigned to thesis/graduate capstone courses until completion.
- P (Pass, Pass-Fail option) and S (Satisfactory) — count toward credit hours but not toward the GPA.
- U (Unsatisfactory) — does not count toward the GPA.
- NR — grade not reported by the instructor.
- W (withdrawal from the university) and WC (withdrawal from a course).
- X — continuing enrollment; converts to F if not resolved by the end of the second regular semester after it was given.
- Y/Z — academic-bankruptcy designations; credit is awarded but the grade is excluded from the student's average.

How GPA Is Calculated
Semester GPA is the total quality points earned divided by the number of hours carried that semester. Cumulative GPA is the total quality points accumulated divided by the total hours carried, including courses failed. Hours earned for "P" and "S" grades are not included in the semester or cumulative average; hours failed (grade of F) are.
Course repeats: a student may repeat a course and have the prior grade(s) excluded from the cumulative GPA if the course is an exact equivalent (same subject and course number). The prior grade remains on the transcript marked with an "E" to show it is excluded from the GPA calculation. A course originally taken for a grade cannot be retaken pass/fail.
Academic forgiveness: undergraduates may use one of three options — First-Year Student Forgiveness, the Restart Option, or Academic Bankruptcy — to exclude earned grades of D-, D, or D+ from the GPA calculation. Only one option may be used per undergraduate career, and credit is lost for the excluded courses.

Academic Probation and Dismissal
A student is placed on Academic Probation if their cumulative GPA falls below 2.00. "Good academic standing" requires a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00; a student whose cumulative GPA stays at or above 2.00 but whose semester GPA falls below 2.00 receives an academic warning instead.
A student already on Academic Probation may be dismissed if their semester GPA and their cumulative GPA are both below 2.00 at the end of the following semester. Dismissal may be appealed to the Academic Standings Committee, whose decision is final.

Degree Requirements
Graduation requires a minimum of 120 unduplicated credit hours (this cannot be waived) and a minimum cumulative quality point average of 2.00, which also cannot be waived. A minimum 2.00 GPA is separately required in courses counted toward the student's major, minor, and concentration.
At least 45 semester hours must be completed at Fredonia (residency requirement), and no more than 45 hours in a single discipline may count toward a multi-discipline major's B.A./B.S. credit total.

Latin Honors and Dean's List
Latin honors at graduation are based on cumulative quality point average: Cum Laude 3.30–3.49, Magna Cum Laude 3.50–3.69, and Summa Cum Laude 3.70 or higher. Students must complete at least 45 hours of graded work at Fredonia to graduate with honors; only credit earned at Fredonia counts toward the final average used for honors.
The Dean's List recognizes students with a quality point average of 3.30 or higher: full-time students enrolled in at least 12 credits that semester, or part-time matriculated students after accruing credits in multiples of 12 across consecutive fall/spring semesters.

Transfer Credit Policy
The Office of the Registrar evaluates transcripts from other colleges; credit is awarded for parallel liberal arts courses passed at regionally accredited institutions. Students entering Fall 2023 or later may apply a maximum of 66 lower-division transfer credits plus an additional 9 upper-division transfer credits toward the baccalaureate degree.
Transfer grades do not carry over — only the credit hours transfer, not the grade point average. A residency requirement of 45 semester hours completed at Fredonia still applies to transfer students.
