Grading Notations Beyond Letter Grades

SUNY Cortland employs a plus and minus grading system ranging from A to D minus, the lowest grade for which college credit is awarded. Beyond the standard letter grades, the university uses several additional notations, none of which carry quality points or count toward the GPA:

  • H, S, U — an alternative grading system (Honors, Satisfactory, Unsatisfactory) used for courses that don't lend themselves to the full A–E range.
  • P / NC — Pass / No Credit, for courses taken on a Pass/No Credit basis.
  • W — official withdrawal from the university.
  • X — official withdrawal from a course without academic penalty.
  • INC — a temporary incomplete grade.
  • N / NE — assigned when a student registered for but never attended a course; converts to NE (non-attendance failure) if not officially dropped by the 12th week.
  • LG — Late Grade, when no final grade was submitted by the instructor.
  • WV — waiver (requirement met via Advanced Placement or Proficiency Exam); no credit granted.

How the GPA Is Calculated

Grade point averages are determined by dividing the total number of quality points earned by the total number of credit hours for which a student has been graded. For example, a grade of C in a three-credit-hour course is equivalent to six quality points.

Courses taken as Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory or Pass/No Credit are not used in determining the GPA, though a Satisfactory or Pass grade still counts toward degree requirements.

When a student retakes a course at SUNY Cortland, all grades remain on the official transcript, but only the highest grade counts toward the GPA and degree-requirement hours. The excluded attempt is annotated E on the transcript and the counted attempt is annotated I; the retaken course must be repeated at SUNY Cortland under the same grading system to qualify.
