Unofficial Withdrawal Grade (F*)
A student who stops attending a course before the end of the semester without formally withdrawing is considered unofficially withdrawn and receives a grade of F*. The instructor records the student's last date of academic engagement. F* is calculated into the GPA.

How GPA Is Calculated
Each credit graded A through F earns “quality points” at the value shown in the grading scale. The semester GPA totals only that semester's credits and quality points; the cumulative GPA totals all semesters and summer sessions completed in residence at SUNY New Paltz.
- Credits graded S, S* (Satisfactory), R (Repeat), U* (Unsatisfactory), and P (Pass) are excluded from both GPA computations.
- Credits and quality points earned at other institutions (transfer credit) are also excluded.
- Under the Grade Replacement Policy, which applies automatically when a student repeats a course, only the second grade counts toward the cumulative GPA — both grades remain on the transcript.
