Grades that don't count toward your GPA

Only final letter grades are reported on your record. Some grades carry no grade point value and are left out of the GPA:

  • AEG Pass by Aegrotat
  • AS Advanced Standing
  • AUD Course Audited
  • ATT Attended (multi-term course)
  • EX Exemption Granted (Transfer Credit)
  • EXM Exemption Granted
  • GNR Grade Not Reported
  • INC Incomplete
  • P / NP Pass / Not Pass
  • CM Complete
  • SD Standing Deferred
  • W Withdrawn

Unless amended, an INC becomes an F or NP 60 calendar days after the course end date, and an SD becomes an F or NP one year after the course end date.

How your GPA is calculated

Quality points for a course are the grade point value of its letter grade (A through F only) multiplied by the course's credits (credit hours). Your GPA is the sum of quality points for all courses divided by the sum of credits. Grades without a GPA value are not included.

GPAs are computed to three decimal places, then rounded and expressed to two decimal places.

  • Term GPA: courses taken in a single term.
  • Semester GPA: courses successfully completed that are listed within a semester of your program's curriculum or pathway.
  • Program GPA: all successfully completed courses that count toward your program; used for graduation eligibility and honours.
  • Cumulative GPA: all credit-level courses taken at George Brown.

If you fail a course and then successfully repeat it, the original grade is excluded from GPA calculations. Your record marks each course with I (included in GPA) or E (excluded).
