Western's undergraduate grading scale is a fixed percentage-to-letter band table, Senate-approved and effective September 1, 2024:

Western's own descriptors for each grade, printed on the back of transcripts: A+ — "one could scarcely expect better from a student at this level"; A — "superior work which is clearly above average"; B — "good work, meeting all requirements"; C — "competent work, meeting requirements"; D — "fair work, minimally acceptable"; F — "fail."

An F is also assigned when a course is dropped with academic penalty. In some Faculties, failing grades are further distinguished, with a separate designation for marks below 40%.

No — Western does not issue an institutional grade point average. The official student record is the percentage mark itself; the letter grade is a descriptive band over it, not a GPA input.

Western does compute and round percentage averages (class averages, and each student's cumulative and term averages): all marks below 50% count as failures, and average calculations include failed marks — a failing mark below 40% is counted as 40% in the average, while a failing mark of 40–49% is counted at its actual reported value. A running count of failed attempts is maintained.

Cumulative and term averages are calculated to two decimal places, then rounded to the nearest whole number (.45 rounds up) — but only for the purposes of admission to and progression in modules, scholarship retention, and the Dean's Honour List. This rounding does not apply to individual course grades.

A student unable to finish their term work by the last day of classes, for medical or compassionate reasons, may request an extension in writing to the Dean (or designate) of their Faculty. The request must state: the type and extent of the work remaining, the date it is due, and the name of the faculty member who will receive and grade it.

Before deciding, the Dean consults the instructor and the Department Chair or Director. If Incomplete Standing is granted, the Dean informs the student, instructor, and Chair/Director of the deadline for the final grade to reach the Registrar.

Missing the extended deadline results in a grade of zero for that assignment, unless the Dean authorizes a further extension for medical or compassionate reasons. A student still carrying an Incomplete into the following registration session's Add/Drop period must reduce their course load accordingly, or seek the Dean's permission for an overload.
