Grades that do not count toward GPA
Capilano University grades credit courses under its Grading Profile (Senate Policy S2017-01). Alongside the letter grades A+ to F, the transcript can carry notations that are not calculated in the GPA:
- CR / NC (Credit Granted / No Credit Granted) — used for courses where a level of mastery is required; not included in the GPA.
- AU (Audit) and AD (Audit Denied) — no credit and not calculated in the GPA.
- W (Withdrawn) and WE (Withdrawn with Extenuating Circumstances).
- I (Incomplete) — if not cleared by the grade deadline of the following term, it changes to the evaluation attained when it was assigned; the final grade then counts in the GPA.
- CON (in progress, continues in next term) and NGR (No Grade Reported).
An Aegrotat (AEG) may be awarded when a student has completed at least 60% of the coursework but cannot finish; a grade is then assigned and calculated in the GPA. Up to 10% of a course's total grade may be assigned to participation (more only with the Dean's approval).

How your GPA is calculated
For each course, the grade point value is multiplied by the course's credit hours (for example, an A in a three-credit course gives 4.00 × 3 = 12 grade points). The term GPA (TGPA) is the sum of grade points divided by the credit hours taken that term; the cumulative GPA (CGPA) is total grade points for all terms divided by credits for all terms of enrolment.
- All F grades are assigned a value of zero in the term and cumulative GPA.
- Repeated courses (Policy S2003-02): a course may be taken a second time without instructor permission; both grades are recorded but the higher one is used in the CGPA. A third attempt needs permission, and the higher of the last two grades is used.

Academic standing, probation and required to withdraw
Standing (Policy S2003-03) is first assessed after 9 credits, using only Capilano University grades A+ through F, and then at the end of every term. Students cannot drop more than one step in a term.
- Good Academic Standing: TGPA and CGPA both 2.00 or higher.
- Academic Alert: TGPA and/or CGPA below 2.00; recorded on the permanent record but not on the transcript.
- Academic Probation: CGPA below 1.67; noted on the transcript.
- Required to Withdraw (RTW): a student on probation whose CGPA is below 1.59 and TGPA below 1.67; RTW lasts at least one major term (Fall or Spring), and readmitted students return on Academic Probation.
Programs approved by Senate may set their own continuance standards.

Transfer credit and your GPA
Approved transfer credit appears on the Official Transcript of Academic Record, but the grades earned elsewhere are not included in the GPA and are not printed on a Capilano University transcript. Students transferring in can apply up to 60.0 credits toward a baccalaureate degree. Requests go to the Registrar's Office.
