How your GPA is calculated at Parkland
Only coursework taken at Parkland College counts toward your GPA. There are two types: Program GPA (only courses that apply to your specific program) and Cumulative GPA (all courses numbered below 300, including developmental coursework).
Both equal total quality points earned (from A, B, C, D, F grades) divided by total quality hours attempted. Grades of I, W, CR, NC, P, T, MW, IM, Y, S, and U are recorded on the transcript but are not counted toward quality hours attempted, so they do not affect GPA.
Repeating a course: only the first quality grade is excluded from the GPA calculation; the second (and any later) attempt is what counts. The original grade stays on the permanent record, and credit already earned cannot be lost by a later attempt.

Academic standing at Parkland: caution, notice, and separation
Academic standing is set at the end of each semester from cumulative GPA combined with total graded credit hours. A GPA of 2.0 or higher is always good standing; below that, standing depends on a sliding scale by credit hours earned.
| Graded credit hours | Academic caution if GPA below | Academic notice if GPA below |
|---|---|---|
| 6-11 | 1.5 | 1.0 |
| 12-22 | 1.6 | 1.3 |
| 23-32 | 1.7 | 1.5 |
| 33-44 | 1.8 | 1.6 |
| 45-55 | 1.9 | 1.8 |
| 56+ | 2.0 | 1.9 |
Academic Separation I follows a semester GPA below 1.75 while already on academic notice (separated until the end of the next fall or spring semester). Academic Separation II follows a semester GPA below 1.75 in the term a student returns from Separation I (separated for one full calendar year).

Dean's List, Graduating with Honors, and A with Honors
The Dean's List (fall and spring only) requires a minimum 3.5 semester GPA; students earning fewer than 12 hours that semester can still qualify with a minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA across at least 12 credit hours taken that academic year (summer through spring).
Graduating with Honors is awarded for at least a 3.50 Program GPA with a minimum of 30 credit hours of 100-299 level coursework applicable to the program, and is noted on the transcript and diploma.
An A with Honors (AH) grade is available by proposing and satisfactorily completing an approved honors project while earning an A in the course; it does not change the course grade but is recorded as its own grade, worth the same 4 quality points as A.
