How GPA Is Calculated
GPA is calculated by multiplying the credit hours for each course by the grade points earned for that course, summing those totals, and dividing by the total number of credits attempted.
When a course is repeated, the highest letter grade earned is used in computing the cumulative GPA; the lower grade is marked as a repeated course and excluded from the cumulative GPA (it is listed with 0.00 credit hours), though it still counts toward the term GPA for the term in which it was earned.
Students may also apply for Academic Bankruptcy one time only, which removes the credit hours and grade points for one or two terms from the cumulative GPA. Eligibility requires 12 semester hours completed with a minimum 3.0 GPA, or 25 semester hours with a minimum 2.5 GPA, following the term(s) for which bankruptcy is sought. Bankrupt courses remain on the transcript (marked with a # symbol) and still count for federal Satisfactory Academic Progress purposes.

Academic Standing, Alert, Probation & Suspension
Students are in good academic standing while maintaining a cumulative GPA (CGPA) of 2.0 or higher.
- Academic Alert: a term or cumulative GPA at or below 2.0 while fewer than 12.0 credit hours have been completed.
- Academic Probation: a CGPA below 2.0 at the end of a term after 12.0 or more credit hours have been earned.
- Academic Suspension: imposed on a student already on Academic Probation whose CGPA and term GPA are both below 2.0. Suspension escalates through three levels (Level 1: one term; Level 2: one term; Level 3/Disqualification: one academic year) depending on whether the student's term and cumulative GPA recover above 2.0 in the following term. There is no appeals process for an Academic Suspension.

Dean's List & Graduation Honors
Dean's List: students who complete six or more credit hours in a term with a minimum term GPA of 3.50 are named to the Dean's List. A student is not eligible if an F, I (Incomplete), NR (No Report), or NP (No Pass) grade remains on their record for that term.
Graduation with Distinction: requires a minimum of 30 semester hours completed at SCC and a cumulative 3.75 GPA. Graduation With High Distinction requires the same 30-hour minimum with a cumulative 4.0 GPA.
