How ETSU calculates undergraduate GPA

ETSU calculates a grade point average (GPA) by totaling all quality points earned in every course attempted, then dividing by the total number of applicable credits attempted.

ETSU actually tracks four different GPAs, each covering different coursework:

  • Overall GPA — institutional and articulated coursework, excluding pre-college level courses. Used for graduation eligibility, academic honors, and athletics eligibility.
  • Overall Combined GPA — institutional and articulated transfer coursework, including pre-college level courses. Used for suspension/probation status and financial aid eligibility.
  • Institutional GPA — institutional coursework only, excluding pre-college level courses. Used for the Dean's List.
  • Lottery GPA — calculated as prescribed by Tennessee state law and the Tennessee Lottery Scholarship Program.

If a course is repeated once, only the most recent attempt counts toward GPA (excluding I, W, or WF grades). If repeated two or more times, all grades from the third and later attempts count.

Students must have a minimum Overall GPA of 2.5 to take a course as Pass/Fail (P/F), may take no more than one P/F course per semester, and may count no more than 12 credit hours of P/F coursework toward the credits required for graduation. A failing grade earned under the P/F option is computed into GPA; a Pass grade is not.

Suspension and probation basis

ETSU determines suspension and academic probation status using the Overall Combined GPA, which includes institutional coursework, articulated transfer coursework, and pre-college level coursework. The university's grading policy does not publish the specific GPA thresholds that trigger suspension or probation.

GPA basis for graduation eligibility

Eligibility for graduation is determined using the Overall GPA, which is calculated from institutional and articulated coursework, excluding pre-college level courses. The university's grading policy does not publish a specific minimum GPA figure required to graduate.

GPA basis for honors, athletics, and the Dean's List

The Overall GPA is used to determine eligibility for academic honors and athletics. The Institutional GPA — institutional coursework only, excluding pre-college level courses — is used to determine the Dean's List.

How transfer coursework affects GPA

Courses transferred to ETSU on or after August 1, 2015 are not included in the Overall GPA or Institutional GPA. Transfer coursework is included only in the Overall Combined GPA, which also includes pre-college level coursework. Remedial and developmental courses, and courses from which a student withdrew in good standing, are excluded from every GPA.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at ETSU?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at ETSU?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this East Tennessee State University (ETSU) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
