SUNY Orange uses a four-point letter grading system (A through F, with plus/minus distinctions on A, B, C and D; there is no A+). Quality points are computed by multiplying a course's credit hours by the grade's point value; both the semester GPA and the cumulative GPA (CGPA) are the total quality points earned divided by the total credits calculated.

Faculty whose course grading is based on a different numbering system must state so in their course syllabus.

If a course is repeated, the grade earned on the final attempt automatically becomes the official grade and replaces any earlier grade for that course in the CGPA computation; some courses may be repeated for credit only once without Curriculum Committee approval.

• A grade of W (withdrawal), I (Incomplete), or NR (Not Reported) does not affect the semester GPA; an uncompleted Incomplete converts to a Fail and is then counted as an F.
• A grade of ZF, assigned when a student stops attending before the 10th week without officially withdrawing, is calculated as an F (0.00) in the CGPA.
• Developmental-course grades (DVP/DVF) and pass/fail-basis course grades (PP/PF) carry no quality points and do not affect the CGPA.

Students (other than those coded DEVL) are in Good Standing if their CGPA is 2.0 or higher.

A student is placed on Academic Probation, with a 14-credit limit, if their CGPA is below 2.0, or if they have attempted at least 30 non-developmental credits with a CGPA below 1.5 while their term GPA is 2.0 or higher.

A student is Academically Separated if they have attempted at least 30 non-developmental credits with both a CGPA below 1.5 and a term GPA below 2.0.

Grades of W, I, or M are not counted as credits attempted; pass/fail grades earned in developmental courses are not counted as credits attempted either.

To be awarded a degree or certificate, a student must be matriculated and meet a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0, in addition to any programmatic requirements of their degree or certificate program.

Graduating students are designated, by cumulative GPA: Cum Laude (3.20-3.49), Magna Cum Laude (3.50-3.74), and Summa Cum Laude (3.75-4.00). Students who complete at least 30 credits at the College with a CGPA of 4.00 receive the President's Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement.

Full-time students not on probation with a GPA of at least 3.33 the previous semester are placed on the Dean's List; part-time students achieve Dean's List standing with a CGPA of 3.3 or higher for each full-time-equivalent (12-credit) semester of study completed.

Credit courses successfully completed at a U.S. Department of Education-approved college, with a grade of C or better, may be accepted to fulfill graduation requirements. Accepted transfer courses do not affect the CGPA at SUNY Orange — only the credits transfer, not the grades.
