When a student repeats a course, only the higher grade is used to calculate the cumulative grade point average (GPA). If the same grade is earned both times, it is only counted once in the student's average. Although only the higher grade is used to calculate the cumulative GPA, both grades appear on the official transcript.

Grades of P (Pass), AU (Audit), I (Incomplete), NA (Never Attended), W (Withdrawal), and X (tuition-appeal withdrawal) are assigned in some cases but are not part of the student's overall grade point average.

A student must maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 to remain in good academic standing.

• Students with fewer than 12 attempted credits whose cumulative GPA falls below 2.0 receive an Academic Warning.
• Students with 12-29 attempted credits are placed on Academic Probation if their cumulative GPA falls below 2.0.
• Students with 30 or more attempted credits are placed on Academic Probation if their cumulative GPA is below 1.5 and their semester GPA is 2.0 or better.
• Students with 30 or more attempted credits are academically dismissed if their cumulative GPA is below 1.5 and their semester GPA is less than 2.0; a one-time appeal waiver is available, and dismissed students must wait two semesters before reapplying.
• Students on probation are limited to 14 or fewer credits for the following semester, subject to appeal.

An Associate degree requires a minimum of 60 credits (excluding ESL/credit-equivalent courses) and a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0; a Certificate requires a minimum of 30 credits and a program GPA of 2.0, with good academic standing required. Courses retaken for a higher grade count only once toward degree requirements.

Candidates with six or fewer credits remaining may participate in the commencement ceremony provided all other requirements are satisfied.

Full-time students qualify for the Dean's List by completing 12 or more credits in a semester with a semester GPA of 3.25 or higher; part-time students qualify with a GPA of 3.25 or higher for each full-time-equivalent semester (a minimum of 12 consecutive credits). Students with an Incomplete grade or a grade below C in the semester are not eligible.

Phi Sigma Omicron, the college's highest honor, requires at least 28 completed credits (excluding physical education and credit equivalents) at Rockland Community College with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25 and no outstanding Incomplete grades or grades lower than C.

Courses for which a student has earned a grade of C or better may be accepted for transfer. Up to 32 credits may transfer toward an Associate degree and up to 15 credits toward a Certificate, and at least half the credits required for the credential must be completed at Rockland Community College. Transfer credits are not used in the computation of the grade point average at RCC and appear on the transcript designated TRC or CPL instead of a grade.
