Old Dominion University (ODU) GPA Calculator

The grade point average is calculated by dividing the accumulated number of grade points earned by the accumulated number of credit hours attempted. Grades of F and WF, and repeated courses, are included in this calculation; official withdrawals, audits, grades on noncredit courses, and pass/fail degree courses are not included.

The use of plus and minus grades is at the discretion of the instructor.

Undergraduate students seeking a baccalaureate degree may repeat up to five courses in which they earned a grade of C- or lower (C-, D+, D, D-, F, or WF) to improve their cumulative GPA. Only the first repeat of each eligible course is forgiven, and forgiveness applies automatically at the end of each semester. It does not apply to courses in which a C or better was originally earned, to transfer courses, or to courses repeated for reasons other than the original low grade. The policy has been in effect since Fall 1997.

Undergraduate students are reviewed each semester against a minimum 2.00 cumulative GPA. A cumulative GPA below 2.00 after one semester results in Academic Warning; below 2.00 for two consecutive semesters results in Academic Probation, which requires a semester GPA of at least 2.00 to continue. Failure to reach a 2.00 semester GPA while on probation (with cumulative GPA still below 2.00) results in Academic Suspension. A returning student must earn at least a 2.00 GPA each semester after readmission or face a one-year suspension.

An undergraduate degree or certificate requires a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00 overall and at least 2.00 in the major, except where a program requires higher. A graduate degree or certificate requires a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00.

Eligibility for graduation with honors is determined using the student's complete academic record, including the original grades of any courses later forgiven under the Grade Forgiveness Policy. An enhanced GPA produced by grade forgiveness does not by itself establish eligibility for honors.

Grades in courses accepted for transfer credit are not counted in the computation of a student's grade point average. Prior Learning Assessment credit is treated the same way: no letter grade is entered, a Pass ("XP") is recorded instead, and it does not count toward the GPA.
