How CGPA Is Calculated

CGPA is calculated by multiplying the numerical equivalent of each course's letter grade by its credit hours, summing the grade points earned across all courses, and dividing by the total credits attempted.

'F', 'I', and 'W' are not passing grades. An 'F' earns no credit; the student must repeat the course within the next 3 semesters, paying full tuition for it, to convert the grade to a passing one. An 'I' (Incomplete) automatically converts to 'F' if not resolved to a passing grade within 2 semesters. A 'W' (Withdrawal) is later converted to either a passing grade or 'F'.

A student who earns lower than a 'B' in a course may retake it as a new course within the next two semesters; the higher of the two grades counts toward the final CGPA, and the lower grade does not appear on the transcript.

Scholastic Standing, Probation, and Dismissal

A student must maintain a minimum CGPA of 2.00, both in the individual semester and cumulatively.

A student whose CGPA falls below 2.00 for the first two (or any subsequent) semesters is placed on probation for the next three semesters. Failing to raise the CGPA to at least 2.00 by the end of the probationary period results in dismissal from the university.

A student on probation may register for at most 2 new courses per semester, only with the academic advisor's permission, and may not drop a semester or take a leave of absence while on probation or subject to dismissal.

Program Duration

An undergraduate program is normally completed in 8 semesters (4 years), with a maximum permitted duration of 8 years. A graduate program is normally completed in 2-4 semesters (1-2 years), with a maximum permitted duration of 5 years.

Retaken Courses and Awards

A student who uses the course-retake policy to replace a grade is not eligible to receive a Gold Medal or Award.

Course Waiver

A student who has completed the same or an advanced course with a letter grade of 'B' or higher at an institution approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh may be granted a course waiver. A grade of 'C' may also be considered for a waiver if the awarding institution's highest letter grade ('A' or 'A+') is based on 90% or above marks, with its 'C' equivalent to 60 marks. GUB reserves the right to accept or reject any course-waiver request.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at GUB?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at GUB?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Green University of Bangladesh (GUB) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
