How UTK Calculates GPA
GPA is calculated by dividing the sum of quality points earned by the sum of attempted hours for all courses receiving a grade used in calculating the GPA.
Incomplete (I) grades are not calculated in the GPA. When a course is repeated, the original attempt's hours and quality points are excluded from the GPA, and the repeated attempt's earned hours are excluded from cumulative totals.

Frequently asked questions
What grading scheme does University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK) use?
Where does this UTK grade scale come from?
Does UTK use a different grading scale for any programs?
Yes. The Winston College of Law grades on its own scale, separate from the undergraduate/graduate scale used everywhere else at UT Knoxville. From fall 2006 through summer 2025, the College of Law used a numerical 0.0-4.3 scale; effective fall 2025, it returned to a letter-grade system. This calculator reflects the general undergraduate/graduate scale only.
Veterinary Medicine coursework, by contrast, is graded on the same scale as other graduate coursework -- it is not a separate scale.
