Grading scale

University of Phoenix (UOPX) grades courses on a letter scale with quality points from 4.00 (A) down to 0.00 (F). There is no A+ grade.

  • A = 4.00, A- = 3.67
  • B+ = 3.33, B = 3.00, B- = 2.67
  • C+ = 2.33, C = 2.00, C- = 1.67
  • D+ = 1.33, D = 1.00, D- = 0.67
  • F = 0.00

The minimum passing grade for a University course is D-, though some programs and courses require a higher minimum grade. A grade below the course's minimum passing grade earns no quality points.

How GPA is calculated

Program GPA is the sum of a student's UOPX program-specific quality points divided by the sum of program-specific attempted credits. Cumulative GPA is the sum of all UOPX quality points divided by all UOPX attempted credits.

The following do not earn quality points and are not counted in the GPA: Incomplete (I), In Progress (IP), In Progress Extension (IX), Withdrawal (W), Passing (P), Audit (AU), No Grade Awarded (QC), No Credit (NC), Waived With Credit (WC), and Removed Course (RC).

If a student repeats a course, only the most recent attempt counts toward cumulative GPA and credit hours, though both attempts remain on the transcript. Students may also apply Academic Forgiveness: a Course Repeat removes the original grade from the GPA, or (for eligible students) an Academic Reprieve removes up to one or two course grades from the program GPA without retaking the course.

Academic standing and probation

Undergraduate students must maintain a cumulative program GPA of at least 2.0, and graduate students at least 3.0 (some programs set a higher minimum). Students whose program GPA falls below their program's minimum are placed on Academic Probation (AP) and given a period of consecutive courses to bring their GPA back to the required minimum.

Students who do not meet a course's designated minimum grade are placed in Scholastic Disqualification (SD) status until they satisfy their program's progression requirements. Students who fail to recover during their AP period may be placed in Academic Disqualification (AD) or, for provisional admits, Disqualified for Admission (DA) status, which results in administrative withdrawal for a period before the student may return.

GPA requirement for graduation

Most UOPX undergraduate degree and certificate programs require a minimum program GPA of 2.0 for conferral; some programs (for example, education and nursing programs) set a higher minimum. Graduate programs generally require a minimum program GPA of 3.0. Students must also complete a minimum residency of 15 credits at UOPX to be eligible for degree conferral.

Academic honors

UOPX recognizes high-achieving students twice a year through the Dean's List (associate, bachelor's, and master's students with a GPA of 3.50-3.99 for associate/bachelor's, or 3.70-3.99 for master's) and the University President's List (a 4.0 GPA, open to associate, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral students), each requiring a minimum number of credits completed in the eligibility period.

Associate and bachelor's graduates earn Latin honors based on their final program GPA: Cum Laude (3.70-3.84), Magna Cum Laude (3.85-3.94), and Summa Cum Laude (3.95-4.00). Master's graduates with a program GPA of 3.90 or higher graduate 'With Distinction.' Direct Assessment programs are not eligible for the Dean's/President's Lists or graduation honors.

Transfer credit

UOPX's Office of Admissions and Evaluation officially evaluates transfer credit from accredited institutions. Accepted courses must be credit-bearing with a grade of C- or better (or a grade of credit, pass, or satisfactory) and are transferred as semester credit hours; courses that duplicate or are regressive to a UOPX or previously-applied transfer course are not accepted.

Students may also earn credit through Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) for prior training, experience, or eligible coursework evaluated against college-level learning standards; there is no fee for PLA evaluation.

How do I convert semester GPA to cumulative GPA at UOPX?
Your cumulative GPA is the credit-weighted average of your semester GPAs across every semester: (semester GPA₁ × credits₁ + … + semester GPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + … + creditsₙ). Save each semester to the tracker on this page, by course or as a quick semester GPA + credits entry, and it works out your cumulative GPA on every save, edit and delete.
Is this UOPX GPA calculator free, and is my data private?
Yes. GPAWise is free, with no signup, and your courses and saved semesters stay in your browser: nothing is sent to our servers. "Clear all tracker data" on the tracker wipes them at any time.
