Somerset Community College (SCC) GPA Calculator

The grading system uses a series of letters, to which are assigned grade-point values, based on descriptions rather than a numerical or curved scale.

• A — exceptionally high achievement; 4 grade points per credit hour.
• B — high achievement; 3 grade points per credit hour.
• C — satisfactory achievement; 2 grade points per credit hour.
• D — minimum achievement for credit; 1 grade point per credit hour.
• E — unsatisfactory achievement, indicates failure; 0 grade points. Credit may be obtained only by repeating the entire course.
• F — unsatisfactory achievement in a Pass-Fail course; no value in the GPA. Credit may only be obtained by repeating the entire course.
• AU (Audit), I (Incomplete), W (Withdrawal), P (Pass, Pass-Fail basis), and MP (Making Progress, developmental courses only) each carry no value in computing the GPA. An unresolved I automatically converts to E after the completion time limit (up to one year).

The GPA on the KCTCS transcript is derived from all courses taken at KCTCS institutions. It is the ratio of total grade points earned to total credit hours attempted, excluding courses taken on a pass/fail basis and courses graded W or I. Total grade points equal credit hours multiplied by the grade's point value: A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, E = 0.

Repeating a course: the highest grade earned in a completed course is the official grade and the only one included in the cumulative GPA; credit counts once toward a credential.

Academic Bankruptcy: a student readmitted after 2+ years away who completes at least 12 college-level credit hours at a 2.0 GPA or better after readmission may exclude all prior coursework from the GPA computation (course credit for grades of A, B, C, D, or P is still retained). The option may be used only once.

A student whose cumulative GPA falls below 2.0 at the end of a term is placed on academic probation, and is removed from probation by earning at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA. Students on probation should limit their course load (e.g. no more than 15 credit hours in a semester).

A student on probation for two consecutive terms who fails to earn at least a 2.0 cumulative or term GPA in the third term is academically suspended. A suspended student may not enroll in courses counting toward a KCTCS degree.

A first-time suspended student may be reinstated after at least one 16-week semester away; a student suspended a second time, after at least two 16-week semesters away. A reinstated student is placed back on probation and faces suspension again if the first term back does not reach a 2.0 term GPA.

Dean's List: full-time students earning at least a 3.5 semester GPA while completing 12+ credit hours numbered 100 or above; part-time students earning at least a 3.5 semester GPA while completing 3-11 such hours (with a cumulative total of at least 12 KCTCS credits) are also eligible.

Chancellor's Honor List: full-time students earning a 4.0 semester GPA while completing 12+ credit hours numbered 100 or above; part-time students earning a 4.0 semester GPA under the same hours criteria as the Dean's List. A student on the Chancellor's Honor List for a term is not also eligible for that term's Dean's List.
