New Mexico State University (NMSU) GPA Calculator

Grade-point average is calculated from the traditional letter grades only: A+, A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D+, D, D- and F. Several other symbols are issued that do not factor into the grade-point average: W (Withdrawal), N (Grade not submitted), CR (Credit authorized, no letter grade), IP (In progress), RR (Progress in undergraduate course), PR (Progress on graduate thesis), S (Satisfactory work, normally equivalent to C- or higher), U (Unsatisfactory work), I (Incomplete), and AU (Audit). Courses recorded with only CR, S, or PR count toward earned hours but are not computed in the GPA.

Undergraduate: students may repeat a course for a change in grade only when the original grade was a D or F. Once a grade of C- or better is earned, the course can no longer be repeated for grade-change purposes; the transcript keeps every attempt, but only the higher grade counts in the GPA.

Graduate: students may repeat a course for a change in grade when the original grade was B- or lower, once per course, with the higher grade replacing the lower one in the cumulative GPA (the lower grade stays on the transcript marked with an "E" and is excluded from GPA calculation). Symbol grades (CR, PR, S, U, W) are never replaceable since they do not affect the GPA.

When cumulative GPA falls below 2.0, an undergraduate is placed on Academic Warning, then progressively Academic Probation I, Academic Probation II, and finally Academic Suspension if the semester and cumulative GPA remain below 2.0 at each stage. Each stage adds restrictions (reduced maximum course load, advisor contracts, etc.). Standing returns to good standing once cumulative GPA reaches 2.0 or higher. Students placed on Academic Suspension must sit out a minimum of one semester and apply for re-admission.

Every bachelor's degree requires a minimum of 120 credits, a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 in all courses taken at NMSU, and at least 48 credits in upper-division courses (numbered 300-499/3000-4999). Graduate degrees require a minimum cumulative graduate GPA of 3.0.

Grade-point average calculations are based solely on courses taken at NMSU (or under an approved National Student Exchange) — transfer coursework from other institutions is not included in the NMSU GPA calculation.
