Santa Fe Community College (SFCC) GPA Calculator

Beyond the standard letter grades, SFCC records several notations that are not counted toward GPA:

• AU (Audit): no credit earned; not computed in the GPA.
• I (Incomplete): given only when extenuating circumstances prevent finishing coursework on time; automatically becomes an F if the agreed work is not completed within one year.
• IP (In Progress): the course had not ended when grades were submitted.
• W (Withdrawal): an officially withdrawn course, recorded after the drop deadline but before 60% completion.
• P/F (Pass/Fail, selected courses): P requires a grade of C or better; no grade points are earned, though credit hours still count toward graduation.
• PR (Progress, selected developmental courses): indicates progress without meeting course requirements; not computed in the GPA and not counted toward graduation.
• NR (Not Reported): a grade the instructor had not yet submitted when grades were processed.

GPA is calculated by dividing total grade points by total GPA hours attempted; grade points for a course equal its credit hours multiplied by the point value of the grade earned.

Repeating courses: both attempts appear on the transcript, but only the most recent grade counts toward degree requirements and the cumulative GPA, unless the course is designated repeatable for credit. If credit hours differ between attempts, the repeated course's credit value is used.

Academic renewal: students may petition, one time only, to have up to two semesters of failing grades excluded from their GPA calculation (the grades remain on the transcript, noted as renewal-applied), provided at least 12 credits have since been completed with a 2.0 GPA or better.

Students are placed on academic probation when their cumulative GPA (based on at least 16 semester hours attempted) falls below 2.0. Students on probation may continue enrolling if they maintain a semester GPA of 2.0 or higher, and are limited to 12 credit hours per regular semester (6 in summer) unless given permission.

Students on probation are placed on academic suspension if their cumulative GPA (based on at least 36 hours attempted) remains below 2.0. An initial suspension lasts one semester; a subsequent suspension lasts two regular semesters, after which the student returns to probationary status.

Students wishing to take an overload (more than 18 credit hours in a regular semester, or more than 9 in summer) need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 with no grade lower than a C in the previous semester.

To earn an Associate in Arts, Associate in Science, Associate in Applied Arts, or Associate in Applied Science degree, students must earn an overall cumulative GPA of at least 2.0, in addition to completing the required program of study and general-education credit hours.

Each fall and spring semester, students who complete at least 9 credit hours and earn a term GPA of 3.5 or above are placed on the Dean's List. Pass/Fail courses do not count toward the GPA or the 9-credit minimum, since they carry no point value.
