How grades are calculated

Each course grade is based on coursework completed during the semester (assignments, midterms, and in-course activities) plus a final examination, with the overall course score computed out of 100.

The course score is converted to a letter grade, and the university's grade point average is calculated on a 4.00-point scale, per SEU's own Executive Rules for the Study and Examination Regulations.

Semester and cumulative GPA formulas

The semester GPA is the sum of grade points earned in a semester (or study level, or full academic year) divided by the sum of credit units attempted in that period; a course's points equal its credit units multiplied by the grade's point weight.

The cumulative GPA is the sum of grade points earned in every course studied since enrollment, divided by the sum of credit units for those courses.

Academic warning and dismissal

A student is dismissed from the university after three consecutive academic warnings for a cumulative GPA below the minimum required for graduation, though the University Council may grant an additional chance to raise the GPA.

A student dismissed after an unexcused break in study may request re-enrollment only if their cumulative GPA is not below 1.00 out of 4.00. A student dismissed for disciplinary reasons may request re-enrollment (after a required wait) only if their cumulative GPA is not below 2.00 out of 4.00.

Minimum GPA to graduate

A student may graduate only after completing all program requirements with a cumulative GPA not below 1.00 out of 4.00 (the "Pass" grade) — the university-wide floor. A college may require a higher graduation GPA for its own programs, subject to University Council approval.

Graduation honors

At graduation, the overall academic classification is based on cumulative GPA: Excellent (3.50-4.00/4.00), Very Good (2.75 to less than 3.50/4.00), Good (1.75 to less than 2.75/4.00), or Pass (1.00 to less than 1.75/4.00).

Latin honors are awarded separately to graduates who have never failed a course (at SEU or elsewhere) and completed at least 60% of graduation requirements at SEU: first-class honors for a GPA of 3.75-4.00/4.00, and second-class honors for a GPA of 3.25 to less than 3.75/4.00.

Transfer and course-equivalency GPA rules

A student transferring into SEU from another institution, or between SEU's own colleges, departments, or majors, must generally hold a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 out of 4.00 (or its equivalent) at the time of transfer, though a college council may grant an exception.

Courses equated from prior study elsewhere are recorded on the academic record but are excluded from the cumulative GPA calculation; equivalency requires a grade of at least "Good (C)" in the original course, at least 75% content overlap with the SEU course, no more than 5 years since completion, and a cap of 40% of the specialization's total plan hours.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at SEU?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at SEU?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Saudi Electronic University (SEU) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
