Grading Symbols

In addition to letter grades A–F, MJC uses these symbols, none of which carry grade points or count toward the GPA:

  • P — Pass, at least satisfactory (A, B, C)
  • NP — No Pass, less than satisfactory or failing (D, F)
  • IA/IB/IC/ID/IF — Incomplete, with the letter indicating the grade to be recorded if the work is not completed in the allotted time
  • IP — In Progress
  • IPP — Incomplete Pass (A, B, C)
  • INP — Incomplete No Pass (D, F)
  • W — Withdrawn
  • SP — Satisfactory Progress (noncredit courses only)
  • MW — Military Withdrawal
  • EW — Excused Withdrawal

Calculating the GPA

To calculate a student's GPA: (1) assign a numerical value to each grade received (A=4; B=3; C=2; D=1; F=0); (2) multiply the grade value by the number of units in the class to get grade points; (3) divide total grade points by total units attempted.

Courses graded W, P, or NP are excluded from the calculation, as are courses repeated under academic renewal (signified “R” and “AR”). Substandard grades (D, F, FW, NP, NC) may later be disregarded from the GPA computation under MJC's academic renewal policy (at least one year elapsed, minimum subsequent units and GPA thresholds met, up to 24 units eliminated, irreversible) — the coursework stays on the record but drops out of the GPA math.

Academic and Progress Notice

A student is in good standing when their cumulative MJC GPA is 2.0 or better and fewer than 50% of attempted units carry W, I, NP, or NC.

A student is placed on academic notice after attempting at least 12 semester units with a cumulative GPA below 2.0, and subject to a one-year pause if the GPA stays below 2.0 in each of three consecutive semesters.

A student is placed on progress notice after enrolling in at least 12 semester units with 50% or more graded W, I, or NP, and subject to a one-year pause if that rate stays at 50% or more in each of three consecutive semesters.

GPA Requirement for Graduation and Transfer

To graduate and to transfer to other collegiate institutions, a student must have at least a C average (2.0), based on total grade points earned in degree-applicable courses completed at MJC and other colleges divided by total units attempted.

Graduation Honors and President's List

Students graduate with honors, noted on the transcript and diploma, with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher in all degree-applicable coursework, including transfer work.

The President's List (formerly Dean's List) requires completing at least 12 degree-applicable units in a semester at MJC with a GPA of 3.5 or better and no grade lower than a C; students receive a personal letter of commendation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at MJC?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at MJC?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Modesto Junior College (MJC) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
