How Your GPA Is Calculated

GTCC computes your GPA on a four-point system by adding the quality points earned for each course and dividing by the total number of credit hours for those courses. You will have a program GPA, based only on courses in your program of study, and a separate cumulative GPA, which includes all courses taken for credit at GTCC.

When you repeat a course, the highest letter grade earned is the grade used in computing your GPA for graduation, though all grades remain on your record. A repeated course counts only once toward the credit hours required for graduation.

You may petition to have grades earned five or more years ago forgiven. A forgiven grade keeps an 'N' prefix on your transcript but no longer counts toward your GPA (it still counts toward the separate Financial Aid GPA), and forgiveness may be requested only once while attending GTCC.

Academic Standing

You are in good academic standing with a cumulative program GPA above 2.0. Standing is reviewed at the end of each semester or session and can progress through four escalating statuses if your GPA stays below 2.0:

  • Warning — GPA falls below 2.0 for the first time.
  • Supervision — GPA still below 2.0 after a term on warning.
  • Probation — GPA still below 2.0 after a term on supervision; you are subject to suspension if it remains below 2.0.
  • Suspension — one semester's suspension if your GPA is still below 2.0 after a term on probation, with a right of appeal to the Associate Vice President of Instruction.

To remain in good standing and to graduate, you must have a cumulative program GPA of 2.0 or higher.

GPA Requirement for Graduation

To graduate, you must maintain a cumulative program GPA of 2.0 or higher; falling below this threshold moves you through GTCC's Warning, Supervision, Probation, and Suspension standing process rather than clearing you for graduation.

Academic Honors

Each semester, the President's List recognizes students completing at least 12 credit hours (9 in summer session) with a 4.0 GPA, and the Dean's List recognizes the same course load with a GPA between 3.5 and 4.0 and no grade below a C. The Honors List recognizes students completing at least two courses (6-11 credit hours, or 6-8 in summer) with at least a 3.5 GPA and no grade below a B.

GTCC's chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, Alpha Pi Alpha, requires 12 college-level credit hours toward an associate's degree, a C or higher in ENG 111, and a 3.5 cumulative GPA to join (3.25 to maintain membership).

An incomplete (I) makes you ineligible for any honor roll, and grades of S, U, or AU are not considered toward honor-roll eligibility.

Transfer Credit and GPA

Transfer credits are not included when GTCC computes your overall GPA (though they are included in the separate financial aid GPA calculation), and a validation-exam grade for transfer credit likewise does not count toward your GTCC GPA. Transfer courses generally require a grade equivalent to a C (2.0 GPA) or better. GTCC requires at least one-fourth of the credit hours in your degree program, and one-third of your major coursework, to be earned at GTCC itself.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at GTCC?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at GTCC?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
