Alternative Grading Options and Withdrawal Grades

Certain courses (including student teaching, some internships, and remedial courses) are graded "S/U" only, where "S" (satisfactory) earns course credit and "U" (unsatisfactory) does not; credit by examination and portfolio assessment are also treated as "S/U" and do not count as letter-graded hours. Within the S/U option, work at the level of "C" or better is needed to earn an "S," while under the letter-grade option a "D" is passing; an "F" may still be assigned under S/U (for example, if a student stops attending). A student may elect the S/U option in no more than sixteen credit hours of a baccalaureate degree program beyond any S/U-only courses, and any S/U hours beyond that limit do not count toward graduation.

Under the "A/B/C/NC" or "S/NC" No Credit grading option, all grades appear on the student's record, though a grade of "NC" does not affect the cumulative grade point average; a grade of "F" may still be assigned under any of these options.

A grade of "W" is assigned for a formal withdrawal within the applicable window (before the end of the twelfth week of a fifteen-week session, or after completing 13%-80% of the contact hours in other session lengths); a grade of "F" is assigned if a student withdraws outside that window, stops attending without withdrawing, or never attends and never processes a withdrawal.

GPA Computation, Exclusions, and Incomplete Marks

A student's grade point average is obtained by dividing total quality points earned by total hours taken, excluding courses marked "S," "U," "IP," "INC," "NC," or "W"; grade point averages are not rounded up to the nearest hundredth. The grade of "WF" is used with zero quality points in computing the GPA, while "W" is not used in the computation at all. For courses graded S/U, grades of "A" to "C" are interpreted as "S" and grades of "D" to "F" as "U"; neither affects the cumulative GPA. For courses graded "A/B/C/NC," grades of "A," "B," or "C" are calculated per their assigned quality points, while "NC" does not earn credit or affect the cumulative GPA.

An "INC" (incomplete) mark is not counted in the GPA while outstanding. If not converted to another grade by the grading deadline of the next semester (summer session excluded), it becomes an "F" (or a "U" for an S/U course) and is then calculated into the GPA; an extension may be granted by the academic dean.

Incomplete Marks Impede Graduation

Any "INC" (incomplete) mark still on a student's record at graduation will impede graduation until it is converted to a final grade.

S/U Grades and Graduation with Honors

Accumulating more than twelve semester hours of "S/U" grades may increase the grade point average a student needs for graduation with honors.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at BGSU?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at BGSU?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Bowling Green State University (BGSU) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
