Repeated Courses and GPA Calculation

A course may be repeated up to twice by an undergraduate student under specified conditions. Grades for all attempts appear on the official academic record, but only the grade from the most recent attempt is used in the cumulative grade point average.

Courses graded on a Credit/Noncredit (CR/NCR) basis are never considered in calculating the grade point average, regardless of whether the result is CR or NCR.

Grades for courses that have undergone Academic Reassessment are marked with a leading X on the transcript and are excluded from the cumulative GPA calculation.

Academic Probation and Dismissal

An undergraduate student whose cumulative GPA falls below 2.0 is placed on academic probation and is subject to actions such as mandatory repeat for change of grade, credit hour restriction, or student success programming.

A student whose cumulative GPA remains below 2.0 for four consecutive semesters (excluding summer) will be dismissed; the student is evaluated for dismissal at the end of the second and third consecutive semester below 2.0, and may be retained into a third or fourth semester if the term GPA has improved significantly.

A dismissed student may seek readmission after completing at least 18 credit hours elsewhere with a 2.5 GPA or higher, or after waiting at least two calendar years and submitting a written statement.

President's List and Dean's List

Undergraduate students who earn 12 or more letter-graded credits in a term with a 4.0 grade point average are eligible for the President's List; those earning 6 to 11 letter-graded credits with a 4.0 are eligible for the Part-Time President's List.

Students who earn 12 or more letter-graded credits with a GPA of 3.5 or better are eligible for their college's Dean's List; those earning 6 to 11 letter-graded credits with a 3.5 or better are eligible for the Part-Time Dean's List.

Frequently asked questions

What grading scheme does University of Akron (UA) use?
UA uses a letter-grade grading system on a 0.0–4.0 scale with 12 grade levels: A = 4.00, A- = 3.70, B+ = 3.30, B = 3.00, B- = 2.70, C+ = 2.30, C = 2.00, C- = 1.70, D+ = 1.30, D = 1.00, D- = 0.70, F = 0.00.
Where does this UA grade scale come from?
From UA's official grading policy, published at bulletin.uakron.edu. The grade table on this page is the one the policy sets out, verified Sep 2026.
Do graduate-level courses use the same D+, D, and D- grade values?

No. For undergraduate coursework, D+, D, and D- carry partial grade-point credit (1.3, 1.0, and 0.7). For coursework taken at the graduate level, D+, D, and D- are each treated as 0.0 grade points -- the same as an F -- under the Graduate Bulletin's own grading table.

How do I convert semester GPA to cumulative GPA at UA?
Your cumulative GPA is the credit-weighted average of your semester GPAs across every semester: (semester GPA₁ × credits₁ + … + semester GPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + … + creditsₙ). Save each semester to the tracker on this page, by course or as a quick semester GPA + credits entry, and it works out your cumulative GPA on every save, edit and delete.
Is this UA GPA calculator free, and is my data private?
Yes. GPAWise is free, with no signup, and your courses and saved semesters stay in your browser: nothing is sent to our servers. "Clear all tracker data" on the tracker wipes them at any time.

GPAWise is an independent tool and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by University of Akron. University names and trademarks are the property of their respective owners. Grading data is reproduced for reference — always verify with your institution.
