How the GPA is calculated
Cumulative GPA is total quality points earned divided by GPA-earned hours. AH, A, BH, B, C, UC, D, and UD all carry grade points and count toward the average; IN, W, AU, CR, NC, and Fresh Start/Academic Forgiveness grades do not.
When a course is repeated, both attempts remain on the transcript but only the higher grade counts toward the GPA; a grade from another institution never replaces a Stark State College grade.
Students changing majors or returning to the College may apply once for Fresh Start/Academic Forgiveness, which excludes D or F grades in courses not required by the current program from the overall GPA (all attempts still count toward Satisfactory Academic Progress).

Academic probation and dismissal
Students are placed on academic probation when their cumulative GPA falls below 2.00. A student with 12 or more semester credits and a 0.00 cumulative GPA at the end of any enrollment period is academically dismissed.
A student on probation for one term is dismissed if their cumulative GPA falls below the minimum for their earned credit hours: 1.25 for 1–15 credits, 1.75 for 16–44 credits, and 2.00 for 45 or more credits.
Dismissed students may apply for reinstatement after a first or second dismissal; a third dismissal is not eligible for readmission.

GPA requirements for graduation
To earn an applied bachelor's or associate degree, students must complete their program requirements with a cumulative GPA of 2.00 or above and, in programs with a technical concentration, a technical GPA of 2.00 or above (some accredited programs require a higher minimum). The same 2.00 cumulative and technical GPA floor applies to ODHE one-year and other certificates.

Academic honors
Graduates with a declared major qualify for academic honors based on cumulative GPA: High Distinction (3.80–4.0), Distinction (3.40–3.79), or Honors Program Graduate (minimum 3.25 plus admission to and completion of the Honors Program).
Each semester, full-time students (12+ credits in fall/spring, 6+ in summer) with a 4.0 semester GPA are named to the President's List; those with a 3.50–3.99 semester GPA are named to the Dean's List.
