How GPA Is Calculated

Southwestern College's grade point average (GPA) is determined by dividing the total number of grade points accumulated by the total number of units attempted.

Units taken on a Pass/No Pass (P/NP) basis are not counted in the GPA calculation. Other symbols — including Incomplete (I), In Progress (IP), Excused Withdrawal (EW), Military Withdrawal (MW), Report Delayed (RD), and Withdrawal (W) — are also excluded from GPA calculations.

GPA, Probation, and Withdrawal Limits

GPA is used to determine eligibility for academic achievement recognitions, as well as academic probation and disqualification. Although a No Pass (NP) grade is not counted toward GPA, units attempted for which an NP is assigned are considered in probation and dismissal procedures. Similarly, a Withdrawal (W) is not used in calculating GPA but is used in determining academic and progress probation and dismissal.

Students may not withdraw with a W symbol more than three times for enrollment in the same course. A student may petition the Office of Admissions and Records for one additional repetition under District Policy & Procedure No. 4225.

  • President's List — 4.0 GPA
  • Vice President's List — 3.50 to 3.99 GPA

How do I convert semester GPA to cumulative GPA at SWC?
Your cumulative GPA is the credit-weighted average of your semester GPAs across every semester: (semester GPA₁ × credits₁ + … + semester GPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + … + creditsₙ). Save each semester to the tracker on this page, by course or as a quick semester GPA + credits entry, and it works out your cumulative GPA on every save, edit and delete.
Is this SWC GPA calculator free, and is my data private?
Yes. GPAWise is free, with no signup, and your courses and saved semesters stay in your browser: nothing is sent to our servers. "Clear all tracker data" on the tracker wipes them at any time.
