How the GPA is calculated
The cumulative grade point average (GPA) is the ratio of total grade points earned (course credits × grade points) to total credits attempted at Saint Joseph's University, including grades of F and FA. Grades of P, NP, I, IP, W, WA, X, AF, and NG do not affect the GPA. Only courses taken at SJU after matriculation count toward the GPA, even when transfer credit was awarded for a course.

Academic probation and minimum GPA by semester
Students whose cumulative or semester GPA falls below 2.00 are reviewed by the Board on Student Academic Review (BOSAR) for a warning, probation, or dismissal. Minimum cumulative GPA required to avoid review: 1.8 through the 4th semester, 1.9 for the 5th and 6th, and 2.0 from the 7th semester on. A standard probation lasts one semester (a second may be granted by BOSAR in extraordinary cases); students may have up to three probations total, no more than two consecutive. A student on probation may not register for more than five courses a semester. Failure to raise GPA above the minimum, or insufficient progress, can lead to academic suspension or dismissal.

Dean's List and Latin Honors
Dean's List: a semester GPA of 3.5 or higher while enrolled full-time and completing at least 12 credits at SJU (a failing grade that semester disqualifies). Latin Honors at Bachelor's conferral require a minimum of 60 semester hours in residence and a cumulative GPA of: summa cum laude 3.85, magna cum laude 3.70, cum laude 3.50.

Transfer students and GPA
Transfer students must maintain the minimum cumulative GPA required for the semester level to which they are assigned. Courses from other institutions for which a student received academic credit at SJU upon transferring, and which contribute to their SJU cumulative GPA, are included in these calculations.
