How grading works at Rio Hondo College
Rio Hondo grades on a 4.0 scale using exactly five evaluative symbols: A (4), B (3), C (2), D (1), and F (0). The college's own policy is explicit that these are the only evaluative symbols — Rio Hondo does not award A+ or any other plus/minus letter grade.
Several non-evaluative symbols exist for course status — P (Pass), NP (No Pass), W (Withdraw), MW (Military Withdraw), I (Incomplete), IP (In Progress), and RD (Report Delayed) — none of which carry a grade-point value or count toward the GPA.

How your GPA is calculated at Rio Hondo
Your grade point average is calculated by dividing your total grade points by your total GPA units: GPA = total grade points ÷ total GPA units.
Pass/No Pass (P/NP), withdrawals (W), military withdrawals (MW), incompletes (I), in-progress (IP), and report-delayed (RD) grades are all explicitly excluded from this calculation — only the five evaluative letter grades (A, B, C, D, F) count toward your GPA.

Academic standing at Rio Hondo
You're placed on Academic Notice once you've attempted at least 12 semester units and your GPA on graded units falls below 2.0; you're removed once your accumulated GPA returns to 2.0 or higher.
Progress Notice applies once your total units with a "W" or "NP" reach or exceed your units with other grades.
You're placed on Academic Pause — one semester, excluding summer — if your GPA is below 2.00 across three consecutive semesters, or if 50% or more of all units you've attempted carry a "W" or "NP." You must meet with a counselor and complete an academic restart before returning.

Using transfer coursework to replace a low grade
If you recorded a "D," "F," or "NP" in a Rio Hondo course, you may use comparable coursework completed at any U.S. institutionally-accredited college to replace it. The original grade and credit remain on your record for accuracy, but are disregarded when your GPA is computed once the substitute coursework is accepted.
