Pass/Fail, Withdrawal, Incomplete, and Repeat Grades

Beyond the standard letter grades, NJCU's undergraduate catalog defines several special grade notations:

  • Pass/Fail (P/F): for certain electives, General Education Program electives or academic minors, and certain major courses at departmental discretion, a student may request a final grade of Pass or Fail instead of a letter grade by filing a Pass/Fail form with the Registrar's Office; the election cannot be changed once filed.
  • Withdrawal (W): a student who files an official Withdrawal Form receives a "W" on the transcript instead of a letter grade.
  • Incomplete (IN): used only in extraordinary circumstances to grant more time to finish coursework; the deadline to resolve an "IN" is the last day of classes of the next semester, after which it automatically converts to "FI."
  • Repeat (R): used only for Academic Foundation courses (catalog number below 100, e.g. ENG 95/96, MATH 95) when a student shows progress but not enough to pass; the course must be repeated or progress demonstrated through a supplemental program.

How GPA Is Calculated

NJCU calculates GPA each semester by multiplying each course's grade points by its credit hours, then dividing the total grade points by the total credit hours attempted; the cumulative GPA (CGPA) applies the same method across all semesters. Failing grades reduce the GPA because the zero-point value is averaged in rather than excluded.

A student may repeat a course once and have the lower of the two grades excluded from the GPA through grade recomputation, applied automatically by the Registrar's Office, up to a maximum of 16 credits; both grades remain on the official transcript with an explanatory note.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at NJCU?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at NJCU?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this New Jersey City University (NJCU) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
Does NJCU use the same grading scale for graduate programs?

No. This calculator uses NJCU's undergraduate grading scale, which includes a D (1.00) grade. NJCU's graduate catalog publishes a separate scale for graduate and diploma programs that has no D grade — it steps directly from C- (1.70) to F (0.00).
