Grade point averages are calculated only from the evaluative letter grades A, B, C, D, and F. "P" (Pass), "NP" (No Pass), and "SP" (Satisfactory Progress) carry no grade point and are not counted in the GPA, though a "P" requires work equivalent to a C or better. "I" (Incomplete), "IP" (In Progress), "RD" (Report Delayed), "W" (Withdrawal), "EW" (Excused Withdrawal), and "MW" (Military Withdrawal) are likewise excluded from GPA calculation.

When a course is repeated, the grade earned each time is included in the GPA calculation, except where a petition under the college's course-repetition procedures (extenuating circumstances or significant lapse of time) permits an earlier grade to be disregarded. Most repeatable courses may not be taken more than three times beyond the first successful completion.

A student who has attempted at least 12 semester units is placed on academic probation if their cumulative GPA falls below 2.00 (a "C" average), and is removed from probation once the cumulative GPA reaches 2.00 or higher again.

A student is placed on progress probation if, of all units attempted, 50% or more carry a "W", "INC", or "NP" entry.

A student on academic probation is subject to dismissal after earning a cumulative GPA below 2.00 in each of three consecutive semesters (dismissal is avoided in any semester where the student's semester GPA is 2.00 or better). A student on progress probation is subject to dismissal if the W/INC/NP proportion reaches or exceeds 50% in each of three consecutive semesters. Dismissal may be appealed to the Vice President of Student Services, and a dismissed student may petition for readmission after two semesters have elapsed.

For a local Associate Degree, a minimum of 60 semester units is required with a cumulative GPA of 2.00 ("C") or better in all degree-applicable coursework. For a Baccalaureate Degree, a minimum of 120 semester units is required with the same 2.00 ("C") cumulative GPA scholarship requirement in the coursework the degree is based on.

Latin graduation honors are based on cumulative GPA across all degree-applicable coursework completed within the Los Angeles Community College District (minimum 24 units): Summa Cum Laude for 3.90-4.00, Magna Cum Laude for 3.70-3.89, and Cum Laude for 3.50-3.69.

Each semester, full-time students (12+ graded units) with a 3.50 or higher semester GPA, and part-time students (12+ cumulative graded units) with a 3.50 or higher qualifying-semester GPA, are placed on the Dean's Honor List. Students who make the Dean's Honor List for three or more consecutive semesters are placed on the President's Honor List. Both designations are noted automatically on the student's transcript.
