How grades count toward your GPA

Only letter grades A, B, C, D, and F carry grade points (4, 3, 2, 1, and 0 per semester hour of credit) and count toward the cumulative GPA.

  • S (Satisfactory), I (Incomplete), R (Repeat indicator), W (Withdrawal), N, and X (Audit) are not included in the GPA, though they appear on the transcript.
  • An Incomplete ('I') is excluded from the GPA while outstanding, but automatically converts to an F — which then counts — if not resolved within 12 months.
  • Courses numbered below 1000 are excluded from the GPA regardless of grade earned.
  • If a course is repeated, the transcript shows an 'R' next to the grade and only the retained attempt counts toward the cumulative GPA as of the term it was retaken.

Academic standing thresholds

College of DuPage measures academic standing against a cumulative GPA of 2.00:

  • Good Standing — cumulative GPA of 2.00 or higher.
  • Academic Warning — fewer than 12 attempted COD credit hours and cumulative GPA below 2.00.
  • Academic Probation I — 12 or more attempted hours with cumulative and semester GPA below 2.00; registration is restricted until a counselor meeting and until cumulative GPA reaches 2.00.
  • Academic Probation II — one semester on Probation I with cumulative and semester GPA still below 2.00.
  • Academic Suspension I — one semester on Probation II with cumulative and semester GPA still below 2.00; suspended for one fall or spring semester.
  • Academic Suspension II — one semester on Suspension I with cumulative and semester GPA still below 2.00; suspended for 12 consecutive months.

At every stage, the registration restriction lifts once the cumulative GPA reaches 2.00 or higher.

Graduation Honors (shown on the diploma, and on the transcript since fall 2014) are based on cumulative College of DuPage GPA:

  • High Honors — cumulative GPA of 3.60 to 4.00.
  • Honors — cumulative GPA of 3.20 to 3.59.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at COD?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at COD?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this College of DuPage (COD) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
