How GPA is calculated

Grade point averages are determined by totaling the quality points earned in all courses and dividing the sum by the total semester hours attempted. Grades of I, IP, AU, W, WP, WF, and P do not incur quality points and are excluded from this calculation.

When a course is repeated, the best (higher) grade earned in the same course is used to compute GPA. A transfer student's quality points are computed on the grades of earned semester hours.

Scholastic standards and probation/suspension

All programs of study require a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA for graduation. Minimum scholastic standards of progress by semester hours attempted: 1–6 hours requires a 1.0 GPA; 7–18 hours requires 1.5; 19–30 hours requires 1.75; 31–41 hours requires 1.9; 42 hours and above requires 2.0.

Students who do not meet the minimum standards are placed on Scholastic Probation 1 Semester (P1). A P1 student who earns a semester GPA below 2.0 is placed on Scholastic Suspension 1 Semester (S1) and must sit out one semester. Students returning from S1 are placed on Scholastic Probation 2 Semesters (P2) and must earn a 2.0 GPA for two consecutive semesters; failing that leads to Scholastic Suspension 2 Semesters (S2). Suspended students may submit a written appeal with supporting documentation of extenuating circumstances.

To return to Good Standing from probation, a student must achieve a 2.0 term GPA in the following term. A first scholastic suspension requires at least one full term out before conditional readmission; a second or subsequent suspension requires at least two full terms out.

General graduation requirements

General graduation requirements apply to all plans of graduation: a minimum of 60 hours with a grade point average of at least 2.0 for all coursework attempted (excluding developmental courses). When a course is repeated, the higher grade is used in computing GPA. Transfer students must earn a minimum of 25 percent of the required semester credit hours at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College to be eligible for a degree from the college.

Certificates (typically 30 program-specific hours) and diplomas (typically 45 program-specific hours) require a GPA of 2.0 or above.

Honors, President's/Vice President's Lists, and the Honors College

Candidates who meet graduation requirements and earn a GPA between 3.30 and 3.69 graduate with Honors; a GPA of 3.70 or higher graduates with Special Honors. GPA is not rounded for this determination.

President's List: recognizes students earning twelve or more semester hours with a 4.0 (all A's) GPA in a semester. Vice President's List: recognizes students earning twelve or more semester hours with a 3.30 to 3.99 GPA and no grade less than a "C."

The Honors College requires maintaining a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2 with no grade lower than a C; students who drop below 3.2 but not below 3.0 are placed on one semester of program probation.

Transfer credit and GPA

Credit from regionally accredited post-secondary institutions is added to the MGCCC transcript, and articulated transfer courses are included in the overall GPA. Transfer students are subject to the same scholastic probation, suspension, and re-admission policy as other students, and must earn a minimum of 25 percent of required semester credit hours at MGCCC to be eligible for a degree.

Scholastic forgiveness of grades applies only to MGCCC coursework — MGCCC does not recognize scholastic forgiveness granted by other institutions, and grades on transferred coursework remain included in the cumulative GPA.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at MGCCC?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at MGCCC?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College (MGCCC) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
