Two notations are treated as equivalent to a failing grade. A student absent without a valid reason from the Semester Final Examination is deemed to have failed the course irrespective of marks otherwise obtained, and receives an "X" grade, "regarded equivalent to 'F'," recorded on the semester transcript (Article 2.1). A student barred from an examination for failing to meet eligibility requirements automatically receives a "Y" grade, "equivalent to an 'F' for that Course irrespective of course performance" (Article 2.2).

A "W" grade is assigned to a withdrawn course; per the ordinance, "'W' is deleted from Final Transcript" (Article 3.7). None of X, Y, or W carries a grade-point value.

A student may retake a course to improve a grade of "B-" or below, down to the pass grade, subject to several conditions (Article 5.3, Ref: 29th Academic Council meeting, 31 December 2012): the retake must fall within the two semesters (or three trimesters) immediately preceding the intended term; the student pays full tuition for the course on a credit-hour basis; at most two courses may be retaken for improvement per semester or trimester, and these do not count toward the normal workload; and a student already recommended for graduation is not eligible.

The higher of the two grades is recorded on the transcript, marked "RI" to indicate a retake for improvement.

Course registration load is capped by the student's immediately preceding semester GPA (Article 3.3, Table 3.3): a GPA of 3.75 or above allows up to 24 credit hours (28 for the Faculty of Science & Engineering), stepping down through the GPA bands to 9-12 credit hours (12 for FSE) for a GPA below 1.70.

A student who fails a course graded "F", "X", or "Y" on a fourth attempt may be readmitted if their CGPA is at least 2.00 (students admitted before Autumn 2017) or at least 2.50 (students admitted in Autumn 2017 or after) (Article 8.1.3). A re-admitted student must achieve a GPA of at least 2.00 in their first semester back or face dismissal with no further re-admission appeal, and normally carries a workload capped at 12 credit hours (Article 8.2).

Academic dismissal (Article 10.1) follows a breach of university regulations, failing all courses in 3 consecutive semesters with a CGPA below 2.00, or a fourth-attempt "F"/"X"/"Y" course failure combined with a CGPA below 2.00.

A student must obtain a CGPA of at least 2.50 to be awarded a degree, effective from the Autumn-2017 semester for newly admitted students onward (Article 7.1, Ref: 204th Syndicate Meeting, 23 September 2017); students admitted before Autumn 2017 remain subject to the university's earlier CGPA threshold of at least 2.00 (cross-referenced in Articles 8.1.3, 8.1.5, and 11.2.2).

Beyond the CGPA floor, graduation also requires passing all required and elective courses in the program curriculum, an acceptable academic standing, no outstanding negative report from the University's Academic Discipline Committee, and completion of co-curricular and other University requirements (Article 11.2).
