Grading system
Hofstra's undergraduate letter grades are A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D+, D, and F, described as: A (honors-level performance), B (distinctly above the objectives required by the course), C (achieved the objectives of the course), D (less than required for major or minor credit, but sufficient for full degree credit; not acceptable for major or minor course credit unless approved by the department chairperson), and F (failed to satisfy the objectives of the course; no credit). Hofstra does not award an A+ or a D- grade.
Other transcript notations carry no grade-point value and are not counted in the GPA: P (Pass), Pr (Progress), I (Incomplete), NR (grade not yet submitted), W (Withdrawal), and UW (Unofficial Withdrawal).

How GPA is calculated
Cumulative GPA is calculated by multiplying the semester hours of each grade earned by that grade's point value (its Quality Points), summing the Quality Points, and dividing by the total semester hours for which an alphabetical grade was earned. The result is truncated to two decimal places — it is not rounded.
The P grade is not counted in the cumulative GPA, though its credits count toward graduation. D+, D, and F grades earned under the Pass/D+/D/Fail option are included in the cumulative GPA.

Graduation requirements
To graduate, a student must complete the number of hours required for the degree with at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA in work completed at Hofstra and required for the major, as specified by the major department.

Transfer credit
A student transferring to Hofstra with more than 30 credits graded on a Pass/D+/D/Fail basis must have the approval of the Undergraduate Academic Affairs Committee; for these students, courses graded on this basis may not exceed fifty percent of the total credit hours required for the degree.
