How grading works at Bahria University

Bahria University uses an absolute grading system for its Bachelors programmes: each course grade is fixed by the marks percentage a student scores, against published cut-offs rather than the class distribution. The letter grades run from A down to F with plus and minus shades (A−, B+, B−, C+, C−, D+), on a 0.00–4.00 grade-point scale — the full letter-to-marks-to-grade-point mapping is shown in the Grade Scale Reference on this page.

The minimum passing grade for an undergraduate course is D (50%); below 50% is an F and earns no credit. Attendance matters too: a student must attend at least 75% of contact hours in a course, or they are barred from the final examination and awarded an F. Postgraduate programmes (MBA/MS/MPhil/PhD) use the same scale but reckon F below 60% and drop the C−, D+ and D grades.

How Bahria University calculates GPA and CGPA

Your GPA is the credit-hour-weighted average of grade points for a single semester — the sum of (credit hours × grade point) for each course divided by the total credit hours taken. The CGPA applies the same formula cumulatively across every credit course from admission to the last examination, so courses with more credit hours weigh more heavily.

  • A W (Withdrawn) grade carries no grade point and is not counted in the GPA/CGPA.
  • An undergraduate may take up to 9 credit-hours of electives on a Pass/Fail basis; these do not count toward GPA/CGPA and the choice, once made at registration, cannot be changed.
  • When a course is repeated, every attempt stays on the transcript but only the highest grade is used in the CGPA.

Probation and drop rules at Bahria University

A student is placed on Probation in any semester where they fail to reach the minimum CGPA (or first-semester GPA) for their programme:

  • 2.00 — Associate Degree, BBA, BEE and BS (undergraduate) programmes
  • 2.50 — MBA, MS and MPhil programmes
  • 3.00 — PhD programmes

Each probation triggers a formal warning letter from the HoD. A student who fails to attain the minimum CGPA in the semester immediately after two consecutive probations is Dropped from the programme. A student who lifts their CGPA back to the required minimum (summer session included) is taken off probation and the probation count resets to zero.

Honours, medals and the Rector's Honours List

Bahria University awards Latin honours on the final CGPA, provided the graduate met the baseline eligibility (completed within the regular duration, full semester load, no withdrawn or repeated courses, no migration/credit transfer, minimum 3.60 CGPA, and a clean disciplinary record):

HonourCGPA requirement
Summa Cum Laude3.90 and above
Magna Cum Laude3.80 to < 3.90
Cum Laude3.60 to < 3.80

Gold and Silver medals go to the first- and second-highest CGPA in a graduating batch. Each semester, students with a CGPA of 3.90 or above are named to the Rector's Honours List.

Transfer of credit and migration at Bahria University

A student joining a new programme or campus may receive Transfer of Credit (TOC) for equivalent courses already passed at Bahria or another HEC-recognised university — but only where the grade earned was at least C+ (a minimum of B for MS/MPhil and PhD). Migration into Bahria is allowed only if the applicant's CGPA on the Bahria scale is above 2.5 for BS (3.0 for MBA) programmes.

Credits granted by Exemption are not counted toward the degree's CGPA, and any migration, credit transfer or summer-semester course makes a graduate ineligible for academic honours and awards.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at BU?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at BU?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Bahria University (BU) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
What is the minimum passing grade at Bahria University?

The minimum passing grade for an undergraduate course is D, which requires at least 50% marks and carries 1.00 grade point. Anything below 50% is an F (0.00 grade point) and earns no credit. Postgraduate courses require 60% to pass.

What CGPA do you need to graduate from Bahria University?

You need to maintain a minimum CGPA of 2.00 for an undergraduate Bachelors degree (2.50 for MBA/MS/MPhil, 3.00 for PhD), along with completing the prescribed credit hours within the maximum programme duration. Falling below 2.00 places an undergraduate on probation.

Does Bahria University use absolute or relative grading?

Bahria uses absolute grading for its Bachelors programmes: your letter grade is set by fixed marks-percentage cut-offs, not by where you rank in your class. The exact percentage band for each grade is shown in the Grade Scale Reference on this page.

If I repeat a course at Bahria University, which grade counts?

Only the highest of your attempts is used in the CGPA, though every attempt remains on your transcript. Repeating is permitted only where the grade obtained was C+ (2.5) or lower, and the course must be repeated within one year of the result being declared.

Source: Student Hand Book (SPRING 2026) §1.17.1 — verified Jul 2026

What CGPA earns Cum Laude honours at Bahria University?

Latin honours require a minimum 3.60 CGPA plus the baseline eligibility conditions: Cum Laude is 3.60 to below 3.80, Magna Cum Laude 3.80 to below 3.90, and Summa Cum Laude 3.90 and above. Repeating or withdrawing from any course, or any credit transfer/migration, forfeits eligibility.
