Each theoretical course is marked out of 100%: class participation (attendance, performance) counts for 10%, quizzes and/or assignments for 20%, and the Semester Final Examination (or the Clearance/Carry Over/Improvement Examination, where applicable) for the remaining 70%. Practical/sessional course marks are distributed by the course instructor.

Grade Point Average (GPA) is the weighted average of the grade points earned, weighted by each course's credit hours.

The letter grades W (withheld result), E (exemption/waiver of a course, subject to Head of Department recommendation and Vice Chancellor approval), and P (passed in a previous semester) carry no grade-point value and are excluded from GPA computation.

A student with no 'F' grade in a semester is promoted to the next semester. A student who fails ('F') a maximum of 2 theoretical courses in a semester is still promoted, with carry-over, provided the cumulative number of failed/carry-over courses does not exceed 4; exceeding either limit means no promotion, and the student must re-register for the failed course(s).

Students who fail a course in the Regular Examination may retake it in the Clearance Examination (capped at grade B) or, for backlog from a prior semester, the Carry Over Examination (graded the same way as the Clearance Examination). Students may also voluntarily raise a passing grade below A- via the Improvement Examination (capped at grade A-), limited to 4 attempts over a 4-year program or 5 attempts over a 5-year program; the original Regular Examination grade remains on the transcript only for chronological record.

Students must attend at least 60% of a course's classes to sit its Semester Final, Clearance, Improvement, or Carry Over Examination, though the university may condone a shortfall for acceptable reasons.

A 4-year bachelor degree program must be completed within 7 years, and a 5-year program within 8 years, of admission. Failing to complete all degree requirements within this period may disqualify a student from continuing their studies at AUST.
