Grading Symbols
West Los Angeles College (WLAC) uses the LACCD grading and academic records symbols policy (Administrative Procedure 4230). Only the symbols in the official grading scale may be used to grade a course.
Non-evaluative symbols are not used in GPA calculation: I (Incomplete), W (Withdrawal), CR (Credit), NCR (No Credit), IP (In Progress), RD (Report Delayed), CRX/NCX (Credit by Exam / not passed), MW (Military Withdrawal), EW (Excused Withdrawal). P (Pass) and NP (No Pass) may be given only in courses authorized for Pass/No Pass grading and are likewise excluded from GPA calculation.

How the GPA Is Calculated
Units graded P (Pass) or NP (No Pass) are not used to calculate GPA, though NP units are considered in probation and dismissal review. A student who has received a P grade may not convert it to a letter grade.
Course repetition: when a repeatable course is retaken to alleviate a substandard grade (D, F, FW, NP, or NC), the previous grade and credit are disregarded in the GPA computation and the highest grade earned is used instead. No more than two repetitions to alleviate a substandard grade are normally allowed (a third requires College President approval).
Academic renewal: a student may petition to have up to 30 semester units of substandard coursework (D/F grades) disregarded from the cumulative GPA, to facilitate transfer, degree/certificate completion, or removal from probation; academic renewal is irreversible.

Academic and Progress Probation, Dismissal
Academic probation: a student who has attempted at least 12 semester units in the LACCD is placed on academic probation if their cumulative GPA in all graded units falls below 2.0.
Progress probation: a student who has enrolled in at least 12 semester units is placed on progress probation when W, I, or NP symbols are recorded in 50% or more of all enrolled units.
Dismissal: a student on academic probation is subject to dismissal if their cumulative GPA remains below 2.0 for three consecutive semesters (unless a semester GPA of 2.0 or higher is maintained). A student on progress probation is subject to dismissal if the percentage of W/I/NC/NP units reaches or exceeds 50% for three consecutive semesters. Dismissal is districtwide across all LACCD colleges. Students may appeal probation and dismissal decisions.

GPA Requirement for Degrees and Certificates
Associate degrees (AA/AS) require a minimum of 60 semester units and a cumulative GPA of 2.0 ("C") or better in all degree-applicable coursework. Associate Degrees for Transfer (AA-T/AS-T) require a 2.0 cumulative GPA in all CSU-transferable coursework used toward the degree. Each course counted toward major requirements must be completed with a grade of "C" or better (or "P" if taken pass/no-pass). Certificates of Achievement require a "C" (2.0) GPA or better in all coursework attempted in the certificate curriculum.

Dean's Honor List
A student who completes at least 12 units in one semester with a GPA of 3.5 or better is placed on the Dean's List, and remains on it by maintaining a 3.5 GPA; part-time students qualify after accumulating 12 units at a 3.5 GPA, and again each additional 6-11 unit increment maintained at 3.5. Dean's List achievement is noted on the student's permanent record.
The Transfer Honors Program requires maintaining at least a 3.2 GPA in transfer coursework to remain in the program.

Minimum GPA for CSU/UC Transfer
Transfer to the California State University (CSU) system generally requires 60 CSU-transferable units with a minimum GPA of 2.0 (2.4 for non-residents); a GPA of 2.0/2.4 may not be sufficient for admission to high-demand majors or campuses.
Transfer to the University of California (UC) system generally requires 60 transferable units with a minimum GPA of 2.4 (2.8 for non-residents); a GPA of 2.4/2.8 may not be sufficient for admission to high-demand majors or campuses.
