Northern Kentucky University (NKU) GPA Calculator

A VF (“Vanished F”) grade may be assigned when a student ceases attending or participating in a course without officially withdrawing. It appears on the student's permanent academic record and carries the same GPA impact as an F grade — zero (0.00) quality points.

Undergraduate students may retake a maximum of six different courses, and may not attempt the same course more than three times (the original attempt plus two retakes). When a course is retaken, the better grade counts toward the GPA. A letter grade of A through F cannot be replaced with a Pass/Fail grade, and courses from an already-awarded degree or earned as transfer credit are not eligible for this policy.

A cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 (for courses numbered 100 and above) is required for good standing. A student whose cumulative GPA first drops below 2.00 is placed on academic warning; if it remains below 2.00, the student moves to academic probation (with a reduced course-load cap); a student on probation who fails to reach a 2.00 cumulative or current-semester GPA is suspended. A first suspension requires at least one semester away; a second requires at least two semesters and a formal reinstatement process; a third or later suspension is noted on the transcript as “Final Suspension.”

A bachelor's degree requires at least 120 semester credit hours, including at least 45 hours numbered 300 or above, at least 25% of degree credits completed at NKU, and the last 30 semester credit hours completed at NKU. An overall GPA of at least 2.00 is required, as well as at least 2.00 in the major (and minor/area of focus, where applicable). An associate degree requires at least 60 semester credit hours, the last 20 of which must be completed at NKU, with an overall GPA of at least 2.00 and at least 2.00 in the major.

Bachelor's degree honors require an overall cumulative GPA of at least 3.50 (excluding developmental coursework) and a minimum of 30 semester credits completed at NKU: Cum Laude (3.50–3.7499), Magna Cum Laude (3.75–3.8999), and Summa Cum Laude (3.90–4.00). Associate degree honors use the same 30-credit and GPA-source rules, at two levels: With Distinction (3.50–3.799) and With High Distinction (3.80–4.00).

Undergraduate-level coursework successfully completed at the 100 level or above from a nationally accredited institution, or one accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, may be considered for transfer credit. Accepted credit is posted as an equivalent NKU course with its associated earned credit hours.
