Seton Hall University (SHU) GPA Calculator

Effective with the Fall 2004 semester, Seton Hall University modified its undergraduate grading policy to include minus grades; the change was not applied retroactively to any prior semester. The scale runs from A (4.00) down to F (0.00) — Seton Hall does not award an A+ grade.

Quality points for each course are found by multiplying the grade's point value by the course's credit hours; the sum of quality points earned is divided by the sum of credits attempted in courses graded A through F. The resulting figure is truncated to four decimal places, then rounded by adding .0005 and truncating to three digits after the decimal.

The Fail (F), Failure–Stopped Attending (FSA), and Failure–Unresolved Incomplete (FI) grades are all calculated into the GPA at 0.00. The Pass (P), Incomplete (I), Incomplete Withdrawal (IW), Withdrawal (WD), Audit (AU), Never Attended (NA), No Record (NR), No Basis for Grading–Stopped Attending (NSA), Satisfactory Performance (SP), and Retake Required (RR) notations are excluded from the GPA calculation entirely. The GPA is calculated separately by student level, so undergraduate and graduate coursework never combine into one cumulative figure.

A student who fails a course required for their program must successfully repeat it at Seton Hall to establish degree eligibility; repeating a free elective is not required. When the course is successfully repeated at Seton Hall, the original F remains on the transcript marked as repeated but is no longer factored into the GPA — except that if a student fails the same course a second time, it is the more recent F that is excluded from the GPA calculation. An F earned at Seton Hall cannot be offset by retaking the course at another institution: no statistical adjustment is made, the F continues to count toward the GPA, and only credits (no quality points) transfer in.

Poor academic performance can affect a student's eligibility for financial aid and participation in student activities; students on academic probation are advised to consult with their advisers to raise their grade point average.

Several notations disqualify a student from Dean's List eligibility for the semester in which they are recorded: Incomplete (I), Withdrawal (WD), Never Attended (NA), No Record (NR), No Basis for Grading–Stopped Attending (NSA), and Retake Required (RR, for institutional credit courses). If an Incomplete is later resolved to a grade of C or higher, the student's record is reviewed for Dean's List eligibility.

Students are generally not permitted to retake, at another institution, a course they failed at Seton Hall. If a student does retake a failed Seton Hall course elsewhere for transfer credit, no statistical adjustment is made to the Seton Hall record: the original F still counts toward the GPA, and the transferred course brings in credits but no quality points.
