Pass/Fail, Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory, and No-Credit Grading
Student teaching, practica, and other special courses are graded Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (S/U); an S is equivalent to a C average or better. With academic-advisor approval, undergraduates may take selected courses Pass/Fail, up to a limit of six semester hours or two courses (whichever is greater) per degree; the Pass/Fail option cannot be used for University- or department-required courses, and a failed Pass/Fail course still counts toward that limit and is computed in the GPA.
For undergraduate first-time-in-college students entering Fall 2022 or later, a D or F grade in a General Education course taken within one year of first enrollment is replaced with a No Credit (NC) grade, applied a maximum of four times. NC grades are not calculated in GPA but count as attempted hours; they are not applied to repeated courses or where the student was found responsible for academic misconduct.

How the GPA Is Computed
GPA is the total quality points (grade points multiplied by course semester-hour credits) divided by the total semester hours for which letter grades were received. Any academic requirement stated as a "C average or better" is interpreted as a 2.0 average or better.
The institutional cumulative (UWF) GPA — the GPA used for degree completion and conferral — sums all UWF quality points earned and divides by all UWF hours attempted, excluding hours graded CR, G, I, I*, NC, P, S, TR, AW, W, WR, X, XX, or *, and hours forgiven under the grade-forgiveness policy. Grades from other institutions are never averaged into this GPA.

NC Grades Do Not Change Academic Standing
Replacing a D or F with an NC grade (see Grading System) does not exempt a student from Academic Standing actions. Determinations of academic standing under UWF/REG-3.008 are based on the student's original letter grade, not the substituted NC grade.
