Grand Valley State University (GVSU) GPA Calculator

Alongside the standard A through F letter grades, Grand Valley records several notations that carry no quality points and are not counted in a student's GPA: CR (Credit), NC (No Credit), I (Incomplete), W (Withdrawal), AU (Audit), X (Deferred), NR (No Report), P (Pass), PS (Pass, graduate project/thesis/dissertation), PD (Pass with Distinction, graduate project/thesis/dissertation), and R (Research, continuous-enrollment graduate project/thesis/dissertation courses).

Unless a course is specifically approved for credit/no-credit grading, all coursework is graded A through F.

GPA is computed by dividing the number of quality points earned by the number of semester credits attempted, counting only courses graded A through F.

If a course is repeated, only the grade and credit of the most recent attempt count toward GPA and earned hours, regardless of whether the new grade is higher or lower; earlier attempts remain on the transcript. Grades of I, W, AU, CR, or NC do not replace an earlier grade.

Credit awarded by examination (AP, CLEP, DANTES, IB) counts toward graduation but is never counted in GPA.

Each student must have a cumulative GPA of 2.000 or higher to be in good standing. Probation and dismissal thresholds depend on class standing (by semester hours earned, including transfer hours):

• Freshman (0–24.99 hours): probation at a cumulative GPA of 1.501–1.999; jeopardy of dismissal at 1.500 or below.
• Sophomore (25–54.99 hours): probation at 1.801–1.999; jeopardy of dismissal at 1.800 or below.
• Junior (55–84.99 hours) and Senior (85+ hours): jeopardy of dismissal below a cumulative GPA of 2.000 (no separate probation band).

Students in jeopardy of dismissal avoid dismissal by raising their cumulative GPA above the dismissal level or earning a current-semester GPA of 2.50 or greater; the dismissal process is applied only at the end of fall and winter semesters.

To graduate, undergraduates must complete a minimum of 120 semester hours with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0, a graduation major with at least a 2.0 average, and a minor (if elected) with a 2.0 GPA. Some programs require a higher minimum.

• The last 30 semester hours toward the degree must be earned at Grand Valley.
• At least 58 semester hours must come from a senior (four-year, degree-granting) institution, regardless of total transfer credits accepted.
• At least 12 Grand Valley-earned semester hours must be in the major (6 for a minor).

Graduate students require a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 for graduation.

Dean's List: undergraduates earning 12 or more grade-point credits with a semester GPA of 3.5 or higher are placed on the Dean's List (a grade of CR does not count toward the 12 credits).

Graduation honors (bachelor's degrees awarded beginning Fall 2022) are based on cumulative GPA including the final semester:

• Summa cum laude: 3.900–4.000
• Magna cum laude: 3.750–3.899
• Cum laude: 3.500–3.749

Regardless of the number of transfer credits Grand Valley accepts from other institutions, a bachelor's degree requires at least 58 semester hours from a senior (four-year, degree-granting) institution, and transfer students must complete at least 12 hours in the unit conferring the major (6 for a minor).

Credit by examination (Advanced Placement, CLEP, DANTES, International Baccalaureate) counts toward graduation, up to a combined maximum of 32 hours, but is never included in GPA calculations. Examination credit is only awarded for courses the student has not already registered for at Grand Valley or elsewhere.
