Grading Options and Other Grade Symbols

Undergraduate students choose between two grading options for eligible courses. Option 1 uses the standard letter scale (A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D, F). Option 2 uses S (Satisfactory, grade of C- or higher) / NC (No Credit, grade of D or F); it may be applied to a maximum of 15 semester hours toward graduation, and courses used to fulfill the Common Academic Program must be taken under Option 1.

Other grade symbols include I (Incomplete, must be resolved within 30 days or converts to F/NC), W (Withdrawn), IP (In Progress), K/K*/KP (transfer or pending transfer credit, no quality points), X (Audit, no credit or quality points), and AP/EM (credit by examination, no quality points).

GPA Calculation and Course Retakes

Semester GPA is total quality points divided by semester credit hours carried under Option 1; Cumulative GPA is total quality points divided by cumulative credit hours carried under Option 1. Marks of I, K, IP, S, W, X, and NC are disregarded in computing the GPA, and the University does not round up a student's grade-point average.

Students may retake University of Dayton courses for up to 12 semester credit hours (except Option 2 courses). The higher grade counts toward the cumulative GPA; the lower grade remains on the transcript marked "E" (grade excluded). A third attempt at a course requires the dean's approval, and only the higher of the first two grades is excluded.

Transfer Credit Marks

Transfer credit is recorded with a K mark (K* for CAP-eligible transfer courses, K_LW for internal Law transfers, KP while transfer credit is pending); no quality points are awarded for K-marked credit, and it is disregarded in computing the GPA. K credit is not allowed for English courses taken at institutions where English is not the native language.

How do I convert semester GPA to cumulative GPA at UD?
Your cumulative GPA is the credit-weighted average of your semester GPAs across every semester: (semester GPA₁ × credits₁ + … + semester GPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + … + creditsₙ). Save each semester to the tracker on this page, by course or as a quick semester GPA + credits entry, and it works out your cumulative GPA on every save, edit and delete.
Is this UD GPA calculator free, and is my data private?
Yes. GPAWise is free, with no signup, and your courses and saved semesters stay in your browser: nothing is sent to our servers. "Clear all tracker data" on the tracker wipes them at any time.
