Grade Notations

Beyond the letter/point scale, TSU's catalog defines several non-point notations. An I ("Incomplete") is given only when a student's work is satisfactory in quality but incomplete for reasons beyond their control; it is non-punitive, and the course's semester hours are not considered in the computation of the quality-point average. It must be removed within one calendar year or it becomes an "F."

An R ("In Progress") is given when coursework extends beyond the semester or term and implies satisfactory performance; it will not alter the quality-point average, since its hours attempted, hours earned, and quality points earned are not entered into cumulative totals.

A W ("Withdrawal") is recorded when a student officially drops a course after the twelfth class day of a regular semester (or fourth day of a summer term) and before mid-semester.

How the GPA Is Calculated

The terms "grade point average (GPA)" and "quality point average" are used interchangeably at TSU. In all cases, the average is calculated by dividing the total quality points earned by the total semester credit hours attempted.

When a student repeats a course, the highest grade earned is used in determining the student's official grade point average at all stages and in determining eligibility for graduation (undergraduate students only).

Academic Standing, Probation, and Suspension

Students with a current-term GPA or overall GPA of 2.00 or above are in Good Academic Standing.

Academic Notice: students whose cumulative (institution) or overall GPA falls below 2.00 for the semester are placed on Academic Notice and may register for a maximum of 15 hours.

Academic Probation: students who do not return to good standing in the semester immediately following Academic Notice are placed on Academic Probation, also capped at 15 hours.

Academic Suspension: students on Academic Probation whose current-term GPA and overall GPA are both below 2.00 are placed on Academic Suspension. A student earning a current-term GPA of 0.0 is automatically suspended. The first suspension lasts at least one long semester (fall or spring); any subsequent suspension lasts one year. Students may appeal to the appeal committee and, after the suspension period, must apply for readmission — readmission is neither automatic nor guaranteed.

Correspondence Course Credit Limits

TSU offers no correspondence courses of its own. A student may receive credit for correspondence courses taken at other institutions only with the advance written permission of their dean, and only if the final examination is taken under the supervision of TSU's Registrar.

No more than twelve (12) semester hours of correspondence credit may be applied toward an undergraduate degree, and none may be applied after a student has earned ninety-four (94) semester hours toward the degree — the last thirty (30) semester hours of an undergraduate degree must be taken in residence. No graduate credit is given for correspondence work. Exceptions require approval of the appropriate undergraduate dean.

How do I convert semester GPA to cumulative GPA at TSU?
Your cumulative GPA is the credit-weighted average of your semester GPAs across every semester: (semester GPA₁ × credits₁ + … + semester GPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + … + creditsₙ). Save each semester to the tracker on this page, by course or as a quick semester GPA + credits entry, and it works out your cumulative GPA on every save, edit and delete.
Is this TSU GPA calculator free, and is my data private?
Yes. GPAWise is free, with no signup, and your courses and saved semesters stay in your browser: nothing is sent to our servers. "Clear all tracker data" on the tracker wipes them at any time.
