Grade Point Average

GPA is computed by dividing grade points earned by the number of credits attempted. Grades of E, I, P, NP, W, WP, WF, and NC do not carry grade points and are not calculated into the GPA. Credits attempted for F grades are calculated into the GPA. Only grades earned at SOU are used to calculate quarterly or cumulative GPAs.

Repeating a course: unless a course is designated as repeatable for additional credit, only the most recent credits and grade are computed in the institutional and cumulative GPA, regardless of earlier grades. This applies to both undergraduate and graduate coursework.

Pass/No Pass (P/NP): a student may take one course per term as P/NP (in addition to courses only offered P/NP). A P requires at least a C- level of work. Credits recorded as P/NP are not included in the GPA computation.

Academic Standing and Academic Assistance

At the conclusion of each term, term and cumulative GPAs are computed and academic standing is determined.

  • Good Standing: a term GPA of at least 2.0 and a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0, while making satisfactory academic progress.
  • Academic Warning: a student in good standing who earns a term GPA below 2.0.
  • Academic Probation: a student on academic warning who earns a term GPA below 2.0.
  • Academic Suspension: a student on academic probation who earns a term GPA below 2.0. Suspension is recorded on the academic record and denies all University privileges.

Suspended students may be considered for reinstatement after a one-year suspension, by petitioning the University Registrar through Raider Student Services.

How do I convert semester GPA to cumulative GPA at SOU?
Your cumulative GPA is the credit-weighted average of your semester GPAs across every semester: (semester GPA₁ × credits₁ + … + semester GPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + … + creditsₙ). Save each semester to the tracker on this page, by course or as a quick semester GPA + credits entry, and it works out your cumulative GPA on every save, edit and delete.
Is this SOU GPA calculator free, and is my data private?
Yes. GPAWise is free, with no signup, and your courses and saved semesters stay in your browser: nothing is sent to our servers. "Clear all tracker data" on the tracker wipes them at any time.
