GPA Calculation, Grade Replacement & Fresh Start

Cumulative GPA is calculated by multiplying the quality points for each letter grade (A through F) by the credits for that course, then dividing total quality points earned by total credits attempted in standard letter-graded courses. Transfer credits and non-standard grades (e.g. Pass, Withdrawn, Incomplete) are excluded.

Students may pursue grade replacement once per course, for up to five courses total; both grades remain on the transcript but only the higher counts toward the GPA. See the Grade Replacement policy.

Fresh Start grades (prefixed "S", e.g. SA, SB, SC) reset the GPA to exclude all prior grade points and attempted credits; credit is earned for courses with a Fresh Start grade of SC or higher.

Academic Standing

Undergraduates need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 for Good Standing. A cumulative GPA below 2.0 triggers Academic Warning (registration capped at 15 credits); if it is still below 2.0 the next fall or spring semester, the student moves to Academic Probation (capped at 14 credits), continuing on probation as long as the semester GPA stays at least 2.3, for up to three semesters to raise the cumulative GPA back to 2.0.

Academic Dismissal follows if a semester GPA falls below 2.3 while the cumulative GPA is below 2.0, or if the cumulative GPA is still below 2.0 after the third probation semester. A dismissed student may return as non-matriculated and must reach a 2.0 cumulative GPA before attempting 30 credits to regain good standing.

Dean's List, President's List & Latin Honors

Full-time students who earn at least 12 credits with a semester GPA of 3.5 or higher qualify for the Dean's List; a semester GPA of 4.0 qualifies for the President's List. Part-time students are evaluated annually against the same GPA thresholds.

Latin Honors are awarded at graduation to students who earn at least 45 credits at Southern, based on a cumulative GPA computed only from Southern grades: 3.50–3.69 (Cum Laude), 3.70–3.89 (Magna Cum Laude), 3.90–4.00 (Summa Cum Laude). See Latin Honors policy.

How do I convert semester GPA to cumulative GPA at SCSU?
Your cumulative GPA is the credit-weighted average of your semester GPAs across every semester: (semester GPA₁ × credits₁ + … + semester GPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + … + creditsₙ). Save each semester to the tracker on this page, by course or as a quick semester GPA + credits entry, and it works out your cumulative GPA on every save, edit and delete.
Is this SCSU GPA calculator free, and is my data private?
Yes. GPAWise is free, with no signup, and your courses and saved semesters stay in your browser: nothing is sent to our servers. "Clear all tracker data" on the tracker wipes them at any time.
