Northwestern State University of Louisiana (NSU) GPA Calculator

Northwestern State University's cumulative grade point average is obtained by dividing the total number of quality points earned by the total number of quality hours. An "A" earns four quality points per semester hour, a "B" earns three, a "C" earns two, and a "D" earns one; an "F" counts as zero quality points per hour.

Grades of AU, CR, NC, NR, P, S, U, I, W, Z, IP, and WN are not counted toward the GPA.

A course may be repeated at Northwestern State University; however, all grades earned — including every attempt at a repeated course — are calculated in the cumulative grade point average. A course failed (or in which a required grade is not met) at NSU, then repeated at another institution, will be accepted as credit.

A student is placed on academic probation whenever their cumulative grade point average falls below 2.0, and remains on probation (provided each semester GPA stays at least 2.0) until the cumulative GPA reaches 2.0 or higher. While on probation, a student must earn at least a 2.0 semester GPA to remain enrolled.

A student on probation is suspended at the end of any semester in which they fail to earn at least a 2.0 semester GPA (first-time freshmen admitted in good standing are not suspended before completing two semesters). A first suspension lasts one semester; subsequent suspensions last one full calendar year.

Undergraduate students who have not been enrolled anywhere for at least three years may file for Academic Bankruptcy at readmission: no prior credits count toward the degree or the GPA, the record is annotated, and the student becomes ineligible for special academic honors except as justified by the entire academic record.

A baccalaureate degree requires at least a 2.0 ("C") graduation grade point average on all hours pursued toward the degree, including the major, concentration, and minor fields, and at least a 2.0 NSU degree-program GPA in all NSU courses used to satisfy degree requirements. A minimum of 120 semester hours is required, with at least 25 percent of the hours required for the degree completed through instruction at NSU, and at least 12 semester hours in the major field in upper-level (3000 and above) NSU courses.

An Associate Degree requires a minimum of 60 semester hours, at least a 2.0 graduation GPA in all courses used to satisfy degree requirements, at least a 2.0 NSU GPA in NSU coursework used to satisfy those requirements, and at least 25 percent of the required hours completed through instruction at NSU.

Undergraduate students enrolled full-time (at least 12 semester hours) are named to the Honor List with a semester GPA of 3.0, the Dean's List with a semester GPA of 3.5, or the President's List with a 4.0 semester GPA. Any grade of D, F, U, I, or IP in undergraduate coursework disqualifies a student from all three lists for that semester; hours earned by special examination or in developmental courses are not counted toward eligibility.

Graduates with an overall GPA of at least 3.5 (3.500-3.699) receive cum laude; at least 3.7 (3.700-3.899), magna cum laude; at least 3.9 (3.900-4.000), summa cum laude. All grades earned, including every attempt at a repeated course, count toward these honors; grades from special-examination credit do not. Students who have declared Academic Bankruptcy are not eligible for graduation honors.

Hours earned at an institution accredited by an agency NSU recognizes are accepted, with limited exceptions; credit from non-accredited institutions is not accepted (except for certain Board of Regents-listed community colleges). International coursework requires a course-by-course credential evaluation from an NSU-approved U.S. evaluation service showing equivalence to accredited U.S. coursework.

No more than 65 semester hours of credit from a two-year institution may apply toward a degree at Northwestern (up to 70 for the Bachelor of Applied Science), and those hours apply only at the freshman/sophomore level. While a student is under suspension, no credit earned elsewhere may be applied toward an NSU degree.
